View Full Version : ned patter translation guide
webarama 08-14-2002, 12:42 AM I have seen quite a few posts recently where people are having a hard time understanding some of what our Scottish friend 'ned patter' is trying to convey to us all.
Here's a site which should help you all in your endevours to truly make WHT a multicultural board - http://www1.kingston.net/~mcgaw/patter.html
It contains such classics as;
'Don't ask me what's gaun on pal. Ah'm only haudin the jaikets here.'
and
'That wee yap would talk the hind legs off a donkey.'
also be sure to read this one;
'Don't act it, pal. Ah left a full pint standin oan the bar when Ah went tae the lavvy.'
Lamont 08-14-2002, 12:43 AM Don't need it, Dave. I used to watch "The Young Ones" on BBC. :D
Darned funny, tho.
webarama 08-14-2002, 12:48 AM They were English, not Scotts, there's a fair difference, as many here will attest to. I think most here would understand someone speaking English.
ned on the other hand they struggle to understand.

No your getting mixed up now.
I don't come from Glasgow, Glasgow born people's accents differ very much.
webarama 08-14-2002, 12:51 AM ok ned, where are you from, and where can we find a translator?
Lamont 08-14-2002, 12:52 AM Oh, maybe it was 'Braveheart' then. :stickout
ned patter 08-14-2002, 12:54 AM Oh but don't get mixed up with words and accent. The list of words are all valid for my area but the accents not the same as people from Glasgow.
Lamont 08-14-2002, 01:01 AM Dave, translate please:
"and that's an extreme flyer none of your diamonds"

OK, I'm stumped here - ned?
ned patter 08-14-2002, 01:09 AM LOL, i don't fly any of the diamond kites.
Lamont 08-14-2002, 01:10 AM Ooohhhh, okay. So you fly the fancy shaped stunt kites, then.
webarama 08-14-2002, 01:12 AM Lamont - it was staring us in the face - the answer to our questions - can't beleive we didn't work that out for ourselves.
Lamont 08-14-2002, 01:14 AM <egg on face>
:cartman:
Perfecthost 08-14-2002, 09:13 AM Okay, here is my Ned question of the day:
Ned has stated several times that he is "a bit hard" or looks "a bit hard". Is "hard" being used as a synonym for "tough", "ugly" (no offence Ned---just trying to find out), or something else?
-Lamar
webarama 08-14-2002, 09:16 AM Yep, a little "rough around the edges" perhaps, the kind of fella you wouldn't like to run into in a dark alley.
Perfecthost 08-14-2002, 09:18 AM Perhaps Ned could post a picture.:stickout
webarama 08-14-2002, 09:19 AM Here's some more scottish translations for you -
http://www.paidmyre.demon.co.uk/
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A139033
http://www.interlink.org.nz/projects/chewfat/chewscot.html
Let's all make the effort to learn these terms and use them whenever ned patter is around to make him feel as comfortable as possible.

ned patter 08-14-2002, 11:53 PM No. The only pictures you will get is of my X girlfreinds.

ned patter 08-15-2002, 12:38 AM I got a warning off of Xstrike because people got jealous:( with me be being so young and that i could get the young girls.
I could however send you 1 although it's really bad quality.
webarama 08-15-2002, 12:56 AM Come on ned, stop being so shy - post it
ned patter 08-15-2002, 01:07 AM I'll post one if you post one.
webarama 08-15-2002, 01:11 AM I don't have any photos of my ex-girlfriends :bawling:
ned patter 08-15-2002, 01:14 AM Just post one of your mum or anyone or anything else.
webarama 08-15-2002, 01:22 AM How about my office?
ned patter 08-15-2002, 01:32 AM Dave i would watch that, i can see a window.
A criminal could steal all stuff.
webarama 08-15-2002, 01:34 AM Ned.
1. This gear is in a low crime area
2. We have alarms
3. The police station is next door :)
But thanks for your concern. Now we need to see the photos of your ex's :)
ned patter 08-15-2002, 01:36 AM People complain and get upset when a post pictures of young(er) girls.

The police stations next door?, even more need to be concerned for when criminals get locked up for the night they get sent out and like usual they go for the first house they see.
webarama 08-15-2002, 01:41 AM ned, from your previous posts it appears that you live in an area with high crime and a lot of marauding youths causing problems (which is why I asked where abouts you lived).
I am glad to say that where I am we have very little trouble at all. A little graffiti is about the worst thing that ever confronts us.
I appreciate your concern, really I do, but I think you are seeing things from the perspective of high crime, it's really not something which happens around here.
ned patter 08-15-2002, 01:55 AM Lucky you:D , i live in Edinburgh, over the water from fife.
webarama 08-15-2002, 01:58 AM I have been to Edinburgh - nice place, great castle.
ned patter 08-15-2002, 02:00 AM , great girls.

, great girls.
Yeah, well how can we tell if you wont post a photo of them?
ned patter 08-15-2002, 02:03 AM No i won't give in.
webarama 08-15-2002, 02:13 AM ned's worried that if we all see how good looking the girls are in Edinburgh we'll all rush over to snap them up. True or false ned?
ned patter 08-15-2002, 02:16 AM Ohhhh i'm far too superior so i don't have to worry about anyone stealing the girls.
webarama 08-15-2002, 02:21 AM Is that what you mean in prvious posts where you have said you "look a bit hard"? Maybe that's why the women find you so appealing ned?
Just how much is "a bit"?
Forget the girls, post a pic of yourself.
webarama 08-15-2002, 10:33 AM Yeah come on ned, we want to see your 'hard' face.
ned patter 08-15-2002, 01:37 PM Well there are kids here and i would scare them.
Rotifer 08-15-2002, 04:52 PM Did they remove the pictures you posted before? If not, why don't you just post a link to those?
