I have a customer who has a .ca domain. She noticed that the .com domain is expiring in a few days. She also noticed that the .com site is no longer online, and is therefore hopeful that it will not be renewed.

So how does this work? I know that the name first goes into a redemption period and she is not able to register it until it is released. If that is true, does anyone know what the redemption period is at register.com?

And before the redemption period is over, would she be wise to go through someone like snap.com to make sure she has first crack at the name? Not sure if that would even be necessary as it is not a common domain name. It's pretty unique but it does consist of 2 dictionary words.

Your advice is appreciated.

Register.com uses the standard 30 day redemption period and then there is a delete period that can last up to 5 days. After the delete period the domain is back in the public pool and can be registered.

I've never had an overly important name that I needed to register when it expired so I've used http://www.domaintools.com/monitor/ to monitor the status of the domain (it's free). I've always got the expired domains that I wanted (about 10).

Hope this helps and good luck on getting the domain name!

I've seen domains months past expiration date not dropped at Register.com. Your client should bid at SnapNames/NameJet/Pool. All three, to be sure. Register used to be affiliated with SnapNames some time ago. I don't know if that affiliation is still current.
