We are currently looking to include sms messages to users cell phones as part of one of our services, and are currently looking at clickatell.

Does anyone have any comments on them? or can suggest someone better or cheaper to use in north america?

Sending SMS messages from a computer to a cell phone is free and can be done via e-mail. For example, if you wanted to text message "I am special" to a fictious Verizon number (206-874-9856), you would simply send an e-mail to 2068749856@vtext.com

Other carriers have other domain names appended to their phone numbers.

housefire,

I have used Simplewire (OpenMarket), mBlox, mQube, and SinglePoint in the past. They all have fairly similar systems. If you are writing your own SMPP layer and not going with an HTTP interface or XML-RPC interface, you will notice that they might not always match the SMPP spec ... which can be very aggrevating at times.

Are you planning on doing Premium SMS as well? If so, check with your SMS gateway provider to see what their payout period is. Most will be 120 days, though a few offer 60, and some will offer 30 (usually they will take an extra % off the total charge).

The most important things I would look at are:

- Reporting (Particularly if you are doing PSMS
- Do they support / have plans for MMS? (may not be required for you)
- How are thier account reps? What is thier support policy? Is it all email based or do you get a direct # for your rep?
- How many customers do they have already?
- What is thier carrier mandate policy? (Carrier mandates in the PSMS field are frequent. Many of the smaller aggregators may have very little warning on when they will recieve one - so all change requests may be sent to you as "Needs to get done by tomorrow or you will no longer be able to transfer messages through XXXXX carrier.".

Good luck!

We have used clickatell and have been pleased with them. If you search the forum for them there are a number of reviews of them, all generally good.

I have used Clickatell before, with no complaints. Actually, they were very good. I was up and running in just a few minutes :)

Hey Wirepatch, you're the only one mentioning multiple vendors. Anyone in particular hold your interest? Is singlepoint new?
