How important is it?

Before i took over at my current company , my predecessor submitted several months ago to DMOZ.Evidently we were never accepted, but I understand theres a penalty for submitting more than once. Is there a way to speak to them? Or were we denied for a reason?

DMOZ relies on volunteer editors, and famous for their lazy and uncared attitude. They will put any website (IF) they want to, and any time they want to.

Here is a quote right from their mouth:
ODP is a volunteer organisation and editors edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no system to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them. Neither is every website guaranteed a listing here.

Submit your site to DMOZ and never think about it again. It does not hurt to submit but it is a fruitless endeaver to worry about if you are in there or not. It is not a magic link. It is just like any other link. Some consider it a good link because so many people use the DMOZ data on their site therefor getting you more links than just the one. Even in that case there is no point in putting much effort into making sure you get a DMOZ link. In the same amount of time you can get more links or higher quality.

DMOZ is still important but today definitely less tahn it used to be 3 years ago.

Back in the day, DMOZ was helpful to a website, getting it in there meant some pretty good stuff, and it meant that things were kind of carried across multiple directories.

Any more? I wouldn't worry about it. DMOZ has turned itself into a 'good old boys club', and it's just not worth the time.

I've tried multiple times to get a few URL's submitted. The problem is that, just as with any human edited directory, you're dealing with your competition who has the authority to allow or deny your link, and it's not in THEIR best interest to do so.

My main business site has yet to be included in dmoz (despite 5 years of trying to get it in there), and has a PR of 3-5 throughout the site, and an Alexa ranking of < 500k (I'd still like that lower). This isn't great, but for an average business and someone who REALLY doesn't spend a ton of time doing mass marketing, it's great.

A secondary site I've got, which focuses on themes, etc, runs a solid 5 PR on the main page, despite never getting into the club. Traffic is good, and this is achieved by simply putting a link to the site in the footer of downloaded themes.

There are a number of tricks to getting visitors and inclusion, you really need to find the one that's best for you. DMOZ used to be one of them, but not really any more.

You can submit your website in another category of DMOZ. Maybe the other editor will like your website. It's all up to personal preference of an editor.

I forgot to add this idea. My website got a PR 3 in 6 months without being included in DMOZ. I just follow Google's wisdom in Webmaster Central.

DMOZ editors are adding their own sites only. It's almost impossible to add your site without a pulling strings. If you really want to add your site there - try to find a mod somewhere on the forums, im, etc and enter into the cooperation.

i'm a big believer in submitting to dmoz, however, i've NEVER ACTUALLY got a site in dmoz. dumb volunteers.

- ErickNah its not that important, just leave it as it can take a year to get added. It is imp as any other good directory like yahoo directory. Its a relatively minor factor.

Agreed.. Unless you are submitting a competitor's website. .Then submit it every week :eek:

Just make your own directory site and post whatever the heck you want :p

dmoz is a waste of time!!

it is a pain to have your site in dmoz but it is free and helps you in page rank. It is still a good effort

This bit of information is so wrong in so many different ways.

agreed with dale. It takes a long time for your site to get listed but it is not because the editors are just adding their own sites. It is simply because there are a way too many sites being submitted everyday and the editors need to manually check every single before approval.
