View Full Version : hostpacket...?
ChickenFart 08-13-2002, 07:36 AM I've just moved my site to hostpacket.net. Today, for some reason none of my domain names are resolving, but the http://ip.address/~directory address is. Hostpacket.net doesn't even resolve.
I've noticed that ns1.hostpacket.net and ns2.hostpacket.net have the same IP address.. perhaps they only have one DNS server running and it's down?
Anybody know what's up?
bruce1234at 08-13-2002, 07:40 AM i don't know what's up but the hostpacket.net site isn't appearing for me either!

Not sure.. I woke up an hour ago and it's been down since. I just signed up with hostpacket on the weekend.. does this happen often?
Crypto 08-13-2002, 08:14 AM Yeah it dropped out form me tonight as well, and I just launched today.
What a time to send out the "come and see this site" emails....
faculty 08-13-2002, 08:14 AM Hmm.. I was told that it has something to do with a big bandwidth provider.. cant remember the name.. but it was something like verio..
Something screwed on some ip block..
I was told it would be fixed tuesday florida time.. not sure exactly when but
kronos 08-13-2002, 08:30 AM at the moment hostpacket is still down
Yeah, that figures. I just signed up
too...first it was cyberwings, then
thecartcompany and now hostpacket?
I'm beginning to think I'm not meant
to run a website. :(
Or is it just that trouble follows me
wherever I go? :)
Oh well...such is life.

Well, hopefully it isn't true...just feels that way. I just learned from some of the few folks who actually got set back up at cyberwings that they too can't get to their site using their domain names. This appears to be an DNS problem. So I guess I won't rush to find a new host just yet. :)
dandanfirema 08-13-2002, 09:44 AM Yeah, I was doing a little checking for you guys and it does look like a dns type problem. If you look at http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=hostpacket.net it does appear that maybe dns is down on their servers. Not to slam HP, but that is why it is really a bad idea to have dns running on only one machine. I personally don't even like to see it run out of one datacenter...but that is just my personal opinion.
I see you use dnsreport.com and
dnsstuff.com too! Great free tool
isn't it? :)
dandanfirema 08-13-2002, 09:53 AM Have you tried http://www.samspade.org ? I actually use it to help verify signups. It is a great place to look up domain registrations, IP block verifications and even some traceroutes when required

Nope, never heard of it. But it's
bookmarked now! ;)
Thanks!

dk2002 08-13-2002, 10:11 AM server rebooted but the mai IP still not reachable, finding out why... sorry for inconvenience all :(
hostpacket.net still not reachable either.
Just FYI
fantasmic0 08-13-2002, 10:13 AM aye .. it's dead Jim !
dk2002 08-13-2002, 10:18 AM 9:18am
found the reason....the tech say server# 1 is still scanning its harddisk after reboot...
See what happens when I sign up for
a host?
:D
kronos 08-13-2002, 10:26 AM dk2002,
keep us informed.
thanks !
dk2002 08-13-2002, 10:35 AM 9:32am
The tech say server# 1 need a manual fsck... so it's harddisk problem after server crash, they said it takes 5 minutes to maximum 30 mintues... :(
dandanfirema 08-13-2002, 10:40 AM We have our fingers crossed dk, I have been through a hard disk failure already and I hope that isn't it
We were fortunate enough to have not lost any data that time, but did experience downtime while the data was copied to a new drive.
ChickenFart 08-13-2002, 10:42 AM still seems like a dns issue since domains are not resolving at all. is the dns service running on server 1 as well?
dk2002 08-13-2002, 10:49 AM The tech is following up now, it's not dns issue

dk2002 08-13-2002, 10:50 AM Update: the tech say:
"finished manual fsck. server is back up and accessible through ping and
ssh. cannot access through browser. sending ticket to webtech to look into
this."
dandanfirema 08-13-2002, 10:56 AM If it is dk2002's server, I am sure he knows what is going on.
However, there may be some additional problems as I see that both DNS servers for hostpacket.net point to 64.246.42.67. This ip address is responding to web requests, but according to dnsreport.com (link posted above) it is not responding to dns requests.
dk2002 08-13-2002, 10:56 AM oh Bind failed to start, restoring bind config file now...
dandanfirema 08-13-2002, 11:01 AM Bind is waaaaaaaaay too picky! For those readers that are not familar, it will completely fail to start if even a ; or a } is our of place. One day they should code in a piece of code to reject the bad entries and start it up anyway.

Just use djbdns. Problem solved!

I still can't access through SSH (I use putty)
dk2002 08-13-2002, 11:08 AM Ok all back up and running now :)
The bind problem is caused by a double dns file entry
MotleyFool 08-13-2002, 11:09 AM I second it!
henryi 08-13-2002, 11:11 AM YA....
It's working now...
Thank you dk2002 :)
dk2002 08-13-2002, 11:12 AM server# 1 down for 3 hours, the longest downtime ever since we established... :(
I apologize for any inconvenience made to our clients

Alexander
zhaozilong 08-13-2002, 11:19 AM this time down because hard disk problem????
dk2002 08-13-2002, 11:34 AM yes,
1) a bad guy crashed our server# 1
2) then haddisk problem
3) finally back up and running, the total downtime is 3 hours this morning...
my cell phone did ring but can't wake me up... :(
Do you need one of those electroshock
pagers? :D
i_am_marc 08-13-2002, 04:28 PM dk2002, you should really have two machines for the dns. I mean c'mon, you can't have xxx number of accounts suddenly not working because of one machine. (customer talking :D)
Crypto 08-13-2002, 10:31 PM Was it me? seemed to happen as soon as I clicked on the CPANEL submit to search engine submissiion button....
Dohhh!!!!
