DEAD RAQ

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the forums but I'm sure I have come to the right place to ask for some help! :)

This morning I tried to install PHP 4 on my Raq3. I already had PHP 3 installed and also MySQL but because I want to offer my clients PHP 4, I tried installing it.

I followed the commands exactly from this page:

http://www.carriebartkowiak.com/article.php?story=20001231141455622#comments

I rebooted the server from the Telnet prompt like the tutorial told me too and then I couldnt access my site from the browser.

I then tried going to my server control panel and clicked reboot there. Now nothing works at all! I cannot access the site, I cannot access via Telnet, I cannot access by the control panel. I can only ping the site (www.chilliseeds.com) and I do get a response so that means my raq is messed up big time.

Also, when I try and use Telnet by connecting to http://www.chilliseeds.com, I get a weird message which is:

telnetd: All network ports in use.

Then if I connect two seconds later, it says this:

in.telnetd: error in loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6: symbol _dl_ppofile_output, version GLIBC_2.1 not defined in file ld-linux.so.2 with link time reference

I have a feeling that my Raq is basically messed up. I have 30 sites (fansites) hosted and they wont be happy. I am only 18 and I cant afford to get it fixed as I'm already paying $599/month as it is!

So I would really appreciate any ideas on how I can fix this and what I can do. If it comes to the worst, can I at least get the Raq back to its default config? Ie. Format everything? Of course I dont want to do that because I have a huge forum and 30 sites that would be lost :(

If it helps, I am hosted at Interland.com - I have emailed their support this morning and havent had a reply yet.

Thank you SO much for your help on this.

Sincerely,

Anthony - http://www.chilliseeds.com

Hey Technics,

I'm with Interland.com

The reason I pay $599 a month is because I get:

450MHz CPU
20GB HardDrive
512MB Ram
250GB Bandwidth a month

I know, 250GB a month is a lot! But I already use 200 of that because I host a number of huge fansites like http://www.britneyspearsnow.com and jen-aniston.com - all of which are dead right now because of this.!! arrgh

HotChili,

Are you sure you are pingable?? I can't even ping the server, much less get a telnet or SSH prompt.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do remotely at this point. Your best bet is to call Internland. Have them manually shut your machine down (if possible, have them do it gracefully using the LED panel), and boot it back up.

Linux is a pretty resiliant OS, so you might get lucky :). However, if it doesn't boot back up, you can get in through the serial interface (well, not you, but someone on site with a laptop) and see if you can find the offending process and kill it.

Good Luck

Hi,

if you can gain telnet access again try this -

cd /etc/rc.d/init.d <enter>
./admserv start
./httpd restart
./sendmail start

Oh and youd be better of with a company like http://www.4webspace.com youd save a lot of money with them :).

AArggh!

No, you're right! I can't even ping either. :-(

But it was pingable about half an hour ago.

Hmm..maybe Interland support are doing something to it right now.

I've read about ppl being able to reboot it with a laptop and all that but I hope to God they dont charge me for it!

Thanks for your advice uuallan

I think when I tried to install PHP 4, it must have messed up some files somewhere along the line.

Dang!

The article I followed exactly was http://www.carriebartkowiak.com/article.php?story=20001231141455622#comments

Maybe because I tried to install over an existing version of PHP3 - man this is a toughie..

by the way - the actual PHP version I installed was:

php-4.0.4pl1

Because they said it had a security patch.

Have you called them yet to see if they are working on it?

Unfortunately, you are in the hands of Interland support right now. If they try to charge you, just act tough, and explain that it must be something they did, so you shouldn't have to pay :) :). Definitely do not mention that you are 18.

And dude, hurry up maannn, if I don't get my Britney fix, I'll just diieee :D :D.

LOL!

I haven't called them because I'm in the UK and they're in the USA. I have gone through their "ticket support system" which they said I should do on my first email from them.

Still no response though....

Why can't they be as fast as you guys? :)

Hey guys!

The server is back up. They managed to restart it, then I just commented out the lines referring to PHP4 in the conf files.

Then I restarted and hey presto!

BUT - I was using AdCycle to run banners across the network and now it just says "internal server error"

All cgi scripts work, but I had a C version (compliled version) of AdCycle which is now screwed :(

Any ideas on how to "reload" AdCycle as I have the original files.

Cheers

For $599 @ 4webspace.com you could get 6 raq's totalling 600 gigs!

double check, try to reboot the server again , and see if it will come back up :P, the reason why im asking you this is that even though you edited your httpd conf file ,there is a time that you --might-- have left something in there?
and the next time you update/install a software it will happen again :(

and ya, you paid too much for your server :(

Cobalt's pkg is lame and unreliable.

Try installing manually from tar.gz next time.

Hey domus,

What host is that?!

I did install manually - then it messed up :-(

But I managed to get php3 working again at least. :)
