View Full Version : Mastercard and CVV2/CVC2
Jim_UK 08-12-2002, 07:46 PM Hi,
Do all Mastercards now have the three digit security number on the back of the credit card?
Someone is saying they cannot pay for work we've done because they're card does not have this code so therefore can't pay by c/c. I'm pretty trusting so believed them although I'm 95% sure that all credit cards now have this number and just wanted to check before doing anything.
Thanks :)
CagedTornado 08-14-2002, 01:14 AM I'm pretty sure that some international cards don't support this, but I'd also like a clarification. (I know, for example, that many international cards don't support AVS either -- but I'm not really sure about CVV2)

Tux-e-do 08-14-2002, 01:18 AM Here in Australia it works.
Jim_UK 08-14-2002, 01:22 AM Well this is a client in the US who has had some work done and now cannot pay bacause his Mastercard apparently has not got the security code.
I'm not 100% sure whether this is true so I'm not sure what to do yet

Maybe this will help to locate it (hopefully maybe he doesnt SEE it and just may not be familiar with "what" number it is)
How to find your CVV2 number:
On a Visa or MasterCard, please turn your card over and look in the signature strip. You will find (either the entire 16-digit string of your card number, OR just the last 4 digits), followed by a space, followed by a 3-digit number. That 3-digit number is your CVV2 number.
On American Express Cards, the CVV2 number is a 4-digit number that appears above the end of your card number.

Get him to direct deposit the funds, other than that how are you processing the card, what payment system do you use.
I'm a bit stunned that the US does not have this code.
Jim_UK 08-14-2002, 01:55 AM Its via our Revecom account. Plus his Paypal account suddenly isn't working and now he's disappeared.... suspicious :)
Tux-e-do 08-14-2002, 02:03 AM Hmmmm, does sound a bit sus
akashik 08-14-2002, 05:58 AM my current mastercard has it, and so does the one that's just expired (over two years old now), so I very much doubt there isn't a CV number on it.
That number is there for times just like this as far as I'm concerned.
While he may have a genuine reason, I'd be looking at this from a suspicious point of view till you get the money in your hands.

GlideTech 08-14-2002, 06:03 AM Sounds like he may be pulling a fast one to me. Good luck getting your money.
Feel free to come back and talk bad about him if you have to. We like to read those types of things. :D
Ïf he really does not have a CVV2/CVC2 code on his credit card, then ask him to enter 000 in the field.
If it is correct that he hasn't got a code on the card, the 000 will go through as a valid code.

I remember a little while back when I made an online Visa purchase with my St George Visa; I made a type with the 3 digit number - I didn't realise until I pressed submit.
The transaction still went through which makes me wonder - does it actually validate Australian CVV/CVC2 numbers?

Gernot 08-14-2002, 11:25 AM No, generally a US based processor can only check the CVV code of cards issued in the US. Other processors, like WorldPay, can only check the CVV code of cards issued in the UK.
Other cards are simply not checked for their CVV and you can thus enter whatever you like :)
