View Full Version : rackshack really that bad?
I just had a thought,, if rackshack is supposedly so bad..
then why is this forum hosted on it?
And i dont remember a time when this forum has really been down since ive been here?
So where are all the horror stories coming from?
DanielP 08-12-2002, 07:30 PM The only reason this forum is on rackshack is because they bought the forum.
dbzgod 08-12-2002, 07:30 PM Well, Headsurfer (guy that runs RS) bought Webhostingtalk. No it hasn't really ever been down, the server has never really had problems, there really has been nothing wrong. Except a few things changed when they moved the forum to the RS network. Maybe its because WHT is on the Verio GiG-E?
jayjay 08-12-2002, 07:31 PM Rackshack is not "bad".
It all depends what you want, rackshack does not fit my needs because:
A) They don't provide the type of bandwidth that I want.
B) If something is wrong with hardware, it looks like it takes awhile to get replaced. Lots of this happening.
C) They don't really provide tech support, not that I need it much.. but I don't want them to pull a OS Re-install for nothing.
I prefer people who know alot, and don't mind giving you a few minutes of your time when you actually need it. (Once in a blue moon.)
That's really it.
If it weren't for that, I could be making a heck of alot of money in the hosting biz. But it isn't all about money sometimes.
StarGate 08-12-2002, 09:13 PM Well said JayJay :agree:

i disagree on the hardware part! a little!
lol
I have had tons of hardware problems with rackshack, but they were all fixed within the same day
some were even done middle of the night
But i guess it all boils down to what people consider "awhile"
"awhile" to me is days....
but thats just me =/
jayjay 08-12-2002, 09:51 PM The posts on this board have indicated replacements taking days, if not longer. Some only a few hours.
But, every place that I've been colocated/dedicated in.. will swap in less than one hour. No bull****. I don't have time to waste, and nor do they. The support has been top notch, and the connections. But I do pay for it.
I know that's not how rackshack works. But, they also have tons of customers, and with their level of pricing. They probley get alot of idiots (I'm not saying all idiots you flamers, just a nice chunk of them. There's smart people too!)
With that all aside, I might've choosen rackshack even with their replacement issues, and support issues (they don't provide.. so the quickest/best solution for them IS a OS restore.. hell not that I even ask my provider much about my issues unless it's bandwidth related or hardware.) but still.. they shouldn't give a OS restore for most of the problems. REGARDLESS of their pricing structure. But headsurfer has some nice pockets, so he's not complaining. His business model WORKS.
But..I don't like their bandwidth and that's why I'd never choose them for my business. But.. it all comes down to what you like.
I'd rather pay a extra hundred or two hundred bucks a month for quality service, quality support, quality hardware, quality bandwidth, etc -- If it was for our company. If I just wanted a personal box, I'd goto rackshack.
clocker1996 08-12-2002, 09:54 PM personal server = rackshack works well :)

Like the others stated, the only reason the site is hosted by Rackshack, is because they bought it. As for the uptime... rackspace has only hosted it for a couple of months now.
I cannot say anything good or bad about Rackshack because we have never used them. When searching for dedicated servers, we immediately ruled out all companies that offered $99 servers because we knew we wanted the best for our customers. I have always been one to believe that with quality comes a hefty price, and you do get what you pay for.
seg fault 08-12-2002, 11:27 PM I have had a few problems with this forum being hosted at rackshack.
First, their hardware couldn't handle the forum, another time the mysql server crashed, ping timeouts, laggy, cable cuts
More problems on rackshack than voxel
jayjay 08-12-2002, 11:30 PM I can't read correctly tonight
GlideTech 08-12-2002, 11:31 PM It sounds like Hosticle is talking about performance problems with WHT since the change to Rackshack. How is this his problem?

It definately took some 'settling in' time, but WHT is humming along nicely now on the Rackshack boxes.

Im probably one of those "idiots"....im new to the game and dont know much about Nix etc but im learning fast.
If you were me and were looking for a ded supplier, that offers good pricing, quick and painless support and good uptime etc who would you reccommend???
I guess tech support and server management are the biggest issues for me???
webarama 08-12-2002, 11:46 PM We have two boxes at rackshack, one is a testing box, the other to provide low cost hosting to some clients who need large bandwidth.
They seem OK, have had no issues apart from a faulty hard drive with one at the start. Have been going for 6 months now no problems.
I wouldn't trust our regular clients on them, but as a low cost alternative they seem OK.
GlideTech 08-12-2002, 11:53 PM I hear more about their faulty hardware than anything else. Do they not use high quality parts or what is the problem?
eddy2099 08-12-2002, 11:55 PM So far my experience with them has been quite positive. I am new to dedicated hosting and got myself a Raq which was on offer. The system came up right after the sign up and I was given access to the server right away.
I did drop a couple of questions to tech support and they were answered promptly. I must say I am pretty impressed.
They provide an unmanaged dedicated hosting service which is fine for that price. A lot of things such as patching, loading of applications, backups would be the onus of the clients. But there are quite a number of peer support forums such as this and the one hosted on rackshack so I guess that helps.
As for hardware failure, like anything these are part and parcel of life. I doubt they can be avoided over time but we sure can apply the necessary precaution.
Hope things work out of the best. So far everything has been quite positive.
webarama 08-12-2002, 11:56 PM I think they would probably use low quality parts in order to keep costs as low as possible.

I don't mean the new learners are idiots, just people that expect RackShack to do everything for them and hold their hand. The only way to learn linux is to USE IT. People don't understand. I think everybody has this big idea that web hosting is a jump in and get rich scheme. Totally not. :P
If I was just learning, I might head on over to www.fastservers.net .. From reading on the boards, they seem like a great first host.

sure..???
So I must be a unlucky guy. I spent around one weeks to get them really go into investigation(not replace)...then after I have to complain here, they confirmed that it is HD problems..
during that week, my server went down several times every day and they closed my tickets without solutions everyday.
i think Rackshack 's price is good for personal use e.g you have a big site that need dedicated....but never ever use if for business.. you will lose money, customers and your company good name..
remember, software and hardware "both" are not managed at rackshack. with 99 usd, you may find some other companies at that price for sure...
viGeek 08-13-2002, 03:58 AM With RackShack, it seems to be a Hit Or Miss. Ive read a bunch of posts about hard drive failures and memory failures on these forums, however all of them were resolved. In my expirience, RackShack has been great, I have had only a little to none amount of downtime with theShack, Support is solid(they however will not go out of their way), and the network is solid for the most part!

I hear more about their faulty hardware than anything else. Do they not use high quality parts or what is the problem? Rackshack had problems with AMD boxes. The Intels seem to do a lot better.
But anyone concerned about hardware should go for the Compaq's. Those boxes are a terrific deal.

Actually the only box that couldnt handle the mysql server and forum was the box at Voxel, that's when it had the most problems, I.E. we had to restart services daily and myisamchk almost daily to keep it from overloading. There was a problem when we moved it here with a motherboard frying ( It was by no means a cheap motherboard, was a fairly expensive server board ), but since the sql server was on a separate server we were able to bring up the web server on there as well until we repaired the other one. And I can tell you before we purchased WHT it was rebooted every 3-4 days, so load was a problem for a little while.

Howard - As I remember from another thread, i believe I mentioned the fact that we had told you day one we needed to replace the hard drive ( via a restore ), maybe it was a miscommunication to you, but you disagreed with us on replacing it and did not take our word on it until days later.

We had a severe problem with our AMD based boxes which rather than clocking back when necessary, would just lock up the system, causing it to need a hard cycle. We since have been purchasing solely intel based boards and out of the thousands we've gotten very few are bad, and they're bad at the point that they will not boot up, so there's no chance of them circulating, you catch them right off the bat. Also with the approximately 1700 compaqs we have in right now of two varieties, we've probably had about 7-8 experience problems, and with Compaq's on-site repair they were fixed very quickly ( usually IDE controller, power supply or MB itself ). We also have a hardware ram tester to test memory issues, but unfortunately as we do not build the servers ourselves we have to rely on the manufacturer to ensure the RAM is functioning, and we test all RAM ourselves before performing any memory upgrades in the memory tester, we run a full set of basic tests, complicated tests and then an auto-loop and self-refresh test for about 100-150 cycles, which takes a good bit of time and still may miss 1 out of every 50 bad sticks with deep seated issues.
Shannon 08-13-2002, 09:12 AM [Please note: the times below are estimated, since as of right now the RS members area seems to be down, and I can't pull the trouble tickets up]
Have been a RS customer since March, had one disasterous problem (thought it was bad ram at the time).. took 28+ hours from the time the "Bad Ram, here's how we know!" ticket was filed until the time the ram was swapped (Thanks Patrick!) and the server back online.
Of course, about two weeks later we started seeing issues with the sever again, and immediately purchased a Compaq box, moved everything over, and dumped the Intel WB... Have not had a single problem with the Compaq box since.
Of course, the old server (which has since been resold to another customer, I only pray they got the ram/mobo/whatever issue resolved first!) still shows up in my members section (Yes, I can file tickets for it, including reboot/restore tickets... of course, I wouldn't, but it IS still there) and there are other little things about RS (Bandwidth monitor giving much to be desired, etc) that worry me to no end.
BUT We're happy and content with the service we've been provided since (tickets for reverse DNS and IP requests handled quickly, etc) and would purchase another server from RS going forward. I truly believe the incident with our 28+ hour RAM swap was a rarity, most likely caused by the big rush to get ready for the big sale that weekend and what not, service since then has been great (keep in mind, we never use RS for handholding or little things, the only things I shoot off to them are things we can't do ourselves, like the rDNS and IPs, etc) The bandwidth (Say what you want about Cogent, etc, but we've never seen a slowdown/problem with our RS box, save the fiber-cut incident a couple weeks ago, and even then our server was responsive, just a tad bit slow) and amount of it is great for the price.
In short, if you don't need hand holding, and want an incredible deal on a dedicated box, RS is great. Don't go Whitebox though... get the Compaq, it's just a few bucks more, and worth it (to us anyway) for the safety and security in the long run... but be prepared for some mild quirks at the very least. The bandwidth monitor being the single biggest one right now, since mine was (as of yesterday) stuck at 0.00 gigs total, when I know I've pushed atleast 9 gigs out of that box... this of course is a major sticky point now that bandwidth overage charges are being billed... but this is a topic for another thread (at RS's own forums of course)...
All in all, RackShack Score? 8 out of 10 stars for a Compaq, 6 out of 10 for a White Box. ;)
Feel free to slap me if I'm wrong, but...
Last I knew, WHT was actually hosted at voxel.net, even though it's owned by RackShack. Has this been changed?
WCSWEB 08-13-2002, 01:49 PM Yeap WHT is now hosted at Rackshack and also belongs to Rackshack.
Hi,
No complaint to me to date...
I have a server at rackshack since around a month, then no complaint...
Just one thing to tell to newbie, if you dont know linux (like me) then you may run in hard work, because at rackshack as i seen, redhat is installed, then plesk, then for the rest you have to configure & update your server yourself, you dont get any support at rackshack for that ...
But for me this took a week to learn basic linux cmd, and same for learning about plesk server ! So not to bad, and very happy to date then price is good..

UH-Matt 08-14-2002, 05:05 PM Ive had a RS server about 3 months, very pleased with the service and support.. It did go down once to my knowledge and this was resolved fairly quickly :)
