Regardless, my answer: become an IT consultant. Pick a field - some application area, security, software development, design, project management, systems integration, whatever. Become good at it. Become very very good if possible. 50,000 for a seasoned consultant in many technical fields is less than half a years work. Far less for many. If you have skills that are worth 125$ per hour to someone, then you are looking at 50 days of work. Even in these days, the economy is not preventing many organizations from paying out $125 per hour (1000 a day) for qualified consulting help. Sometimes double that rate. And there are still some vendors charging people out at even higher rates, although that's not as common as it was when the stock market was surging... But $1,000 a day? So no time like now to start. Develop a skill set and join a consulting company and work your way up. That will cut at least 5 years if not more off that time frame. If the person has ability, the sky is the limit. I've said here on WHT in the past that joining a consultancy is the fastest way to get a thorough education on all aspects of consulting. Being a geek is not enough.
