I'm not too sure on this kind of information so please shed some light for me. I hear that webhosting companies treat domain names two ways, one of them gives you complete ownership, and the other type deals with the domain name themself, meaning you do not "technically" own the domain name.

If I go with godaddy (or if you can recommend me a better company), can I register with them and have complete ownership of the domain so I can have it direct to any server I want whenever?

My domain expires in the next 2 weeks. Thanks.

With godaddy you get complete ownership of your domain, its same with any registrar.

If your domain is expiring in 2 weeks, this is the right time to transfer it as the process may take 7 days.

But to transfer you will need EPP code and your email should be there as registrant/admin contact.

Some hosts who also offer domains seem to register them in their own names, not the customers'. Every so often on WHT, there's a horror story of some host that won't release the domain to the customer.

Having said that, lots of people here use godaddy for domains without a problem. Still, in general it's a good practice to get your domains from a registrar independent of your host.
