Has anyone used name.com to register domains?

If so, please post your experience with negative or positive.

I am currently using godaddy as the registrar for all of my domains, but I noticed with name that you can hide your whois information to private for free with them.

Yeah, that enticed me, and everything is speedy with Name.com , I've had no problems, but i've not yet had to try the support :P

Umm, lets see I will just say I wouldn't go with them. I've noticed multiple downtimes there, their control panel is ho-hum but their customer support really just doesn't care. There are quite a few providers out there that do a better job.

Just so that I am clear. I am talking about domain registrar.

Who would you suggest?

I understand who you are talking about and I've had one or two domains there, however I just don't trust them. There are quite a few registrars that I feel do a better job.

I think they're good. You'll miss all the bells and whistles in the GoDaddy Control Panel coz Name's Control Panel is very basic (but it works very well). Support turnaround, in my experience, has been about a day. I think they are offering the best value for money out their at the moment (under cost). Selling under cost should be a warning sign. I did a calculation in another thread that showed if they kept half of their new customers (well domains actually) for another year, they break-even on the whole promotion. So it's too early to say if they'll survive or go for early bankruptcy.

I've also been considering name.com, but being so low-cost was not sure if it was worth the risk. Here's a question... their parent company is domainsite.com, they are a dollar more, but offer the same servies (with free whois proxy)... would it be "safer" to go with them?

I have 18 domains with them, only for price, not valuable too. U have problems related with the limit of whois to 10 results in name.com or domainsite.com , and i try to transfer out As soon i can for that reason.

I prefer the name.com control panel better than domainsite's, although there are obvious similarities. As for safe? Who really knows about any registar. Even the Registerfly fiasco was a safe outcome for some but not others. Apart from their despicable trading practices, mostly those who lost their domains had whois privacy enabled on them.

I do quite like Name.com , my doamins (both of htem) appear safe there, so they can stay there for the time being. They have been fast, and I have monitoring on them, just to see if they do go down at all..

redmeds,

Thanks for asking about us.

As with any registrar, it's important to do your due diligence and I wouldn't expect anyone to become a name.com customer just for our low prices. It's true that we're selling names under cost right now. And that's for a very strategic reason. You've got to make a little splash now and then to get noticed, but I assure you that we're a solid company with both feet planted firmly on the ground.

I'm sorry RossH has had a poor experience with us and I would love to hear more about it, Ross, if you would like to take the time to contact me. We need this kind of feedback to become to best registrar we can be.

And this goes out to any of our existing or future customers - If there are features you feel are lacking or perhaps not explained clearly enough, let us know - we want to make our features and tools work for as many of our customers as we can and the best way to do that is to listen.

As for trust - there's only one way we can earn yours and that's if you give us a shot. I can tell you that we've been an ICANN accredited registrar for five years now and that we are a privately held company based in Denver with a dedicated group of individuals that believes your domain is the most important web asset you have.

i use their doughter(?) domainsite.com since a long time, never experienced any problems with them. also support was quite fast and good.
im moving more and more domains from godaddy to domainsite as i really dont need to change a lot of things with my domains. setting them up, set the nameservers, thats its. a really rare case is to update an address or phonenumber in the whois... but when i needed to login to their site, it always worked for me

Bill,

Thanks you for the feedback. I e-mailed Godaddy and asked them the following:

I have a few domains with godaddy, with each renewal I have to renew private registration as well.

Please tell me why I should not move my domains to another registrar that provides free private whois whether first time registering or upon renewals.

Their answer:

Thank you for contacting Online Support. We offer the best overall prices on all of our products in the industry. While the other companies may provide free privacy, they usually make up for it by boosting the costs of the other products they offer. If there is anything else that we may assist you with, please feel free to contact us via email or for a speedy response, you may call our support line at (480) 505-8877. We are available 24/7 for your convenience.

While there is nothing really wrong with that answer, it did not make me feel I should have a strong commitment to them.

What did you expect? They employ the same practices they accuse other registrars of, as well.
