View Full Version : Valcato.net down...!
kichu 08-12-2002, 11:12 AM It is all the same story!
First the sites are down;
Tall promises of additional servers are made;
No real info is passed on to the customers who have paid money for hosting.
And the bottom line is that your site is down and you have no clue as to what is happening...
deja` vu?
Hmm...
And Valcato is down and the hosted sites are down for the past 2 days.
No hopes for cheap hostees!
That is the way the cooky crumbles!:bawling:

traxx 08-12-2002, 12:10 PM Well, they have posted this in their forums :
-----------------------
"Hi All,
As you know, we're moving all accounts from Dolphin to Solo tonight, and did predict a couple of hours downtime.
Unfortunately, 15% into the move, we were on target to finish ahead of scedhule when Solo suddenly stopped responding. And, to make life for us worse, our colo centers "24/7 tech support" was nowhere to be found, leaving us, and our clients, in the dark.
We finally got through to our colo center to find that they too were in the dark, as they had suffered a sitewide power outtage.
At the present time, our colo center is working on the issue with a team of electricians, meaning that all we are physically able to do is apologise for the continued downtime, and assure you that this is not our fault, and we are doing everything we can to speed up the process.
Once Solo comes back online, we will complete the transfer and get your sites back online."
--------
And new updates are posted after that as well ....
UmBillyCord 08-12-2002, 12:23 PM meaning that all we are physically able to do is apologise for the continued downtime, and assure you that this is not our fault, and we are doing everything we can to speed up the process.
They started the transfer from server to server.
They chose that data center they are in.
The datacenter they chose has no 24/7 support.
But it is not their fault. I hate when host have these lame excuses. Look, everyone has trouble. But why not tell the customer you are sorry, you accept responsibilty, and you have implimented something to ensure they do not suffer through a similar issue a few months later.
When a host says it is not their fault, it is BS.
kichu 08-12-2002, 12:37 PM May be "youknowwho" will soon start a service offering thousands of excuses ending with "we are not at fault" which the conking out hosts can dish out whenever the hostees whine about blackouts and downtimes!
After all they read what is written the host's website : "95% uptime" .. well it is 95% of total time that the server is up; not the total time that your clock shows! ( Call is Lesson No.1 and pay me for it!)

valcato 08-12-2002, 12:37 PM Hi UmBillyCord,
They started the transfer from server to server.
They chose that data center they are in.
The datacenter they chose has no 24/7 support.
When a host says it is not their fault, it is BS.
Just so that you know:
1) We did start the transfer and it was going well
2) We did choose a datacenter, based on research
3) The datacenter we chose DOES have 24/7 support, so why nobody was on the end of the phone, email or AIM i'll never know.
When *some* hosts say it is not their fault, it is BS. When Valcato admits that it's not their fault, we mean it.
Kichu - Valcato is now back online, dont think we're whupped that easily :P
UmBillyCord 08-12-2002, 12:50 PM Sorry, I still disagree.
1) Research would find you a datacenter that runs redundant power feeds AND that runs test to ensure these issue won't happen. Our colo runs numerous fault-tolerant test. In three years, we have had maybe two hours of total downtime at the DC level !!
2) Before you move in, you call support and test it. If they offer 24/7 support, then why were they not there?? Who is to say it won't happen again?
3) Worse-case senerio planning would provide you a fall out. Maybe bouncing back to the old server until the DC issue is resolved, etc....
Look, as I stated before, every host runs into pain in the ass issues. Pair for example just had a ~ 2 day outage on a server. They didn't blame the software or hardware venders. They just said Sorry, our mistake. We are working to ensure this issue will not happen again. When a host says "it is not their fault", that is wrong. Unless something completely ridiculous happens like a meteor hits your colo, you should have 99.9% of all other issues planned for or at least ensure your colo has the ones that are not immediatally in your control.
Good luck gettingthings running. It always sucks when servers are down for long periods.
valcato 08-12-2002, 01:13 PM Hi UmBillyCord,
Thanks for the understanding!
Actually, I thought that our datacenter (BurstNET) would have had safeguards in place, and their 24/7 support has always been available until then.
Ah well, i guess it happens to us all at times :P

You're not stuck them. You can easily move to a different web host if you're not satisfied.
adammc 08-12-2002, 01:37 PM wow...the slightest hint of downtime and some people jump all over the host...
maybe that's the effect cyberwings has had on us all...

Umm 2 days is alot of downtime.. Personally I would request two months free hosting for that much downtime.. and at the least one month. if they wont give that I would sigguest looking elsewhere.. it sounds like downtime is not the only issue here thought.. but i would hardly call 2 days a "hint" of downtime

ok, so maybe it's not a 'hint' of downtime...but there was prior notification of downtime, it was just longer than expected - people should be a little more trusting.
Personally, I think that asking for two months of free hosting is a bit much...
traxx 08-12-2002, 02:02 PM and, everything sems to be up and running now... at least my sites are
coight 08-12-2002, 02:19 PM If the datacentre clearly states 24/7 Phone, AIM etc support I would be demanding my money back.
kichu 08-12-2002, 02:20 PM My site is up thanks to Jerome of Valcato on IM. He was very relaxed and nice.
Hope the CW jinx won't visit again!
S.K, losing sleep over the CW nightmare!
