View Full Version : Need opinions on start-up UK Registrar
blob2 08-12-2002, 05:37 AM I'm involved in starting a UK domain registrar and I need some opinions on pricing. The site's main competitors will be 123reg and ukreg. Thses sites hide their total charge... so our company statement will be "no hidden charges."
.com
.net
.org
.biz
.info
.us
.name
Will all be £7.99 a year with no extra charges. Transfer to us will be £6.99 including 1 year extension.
.uk
We cant even start to compete on pricing with this extension, 123reg are charging £6.79 in total. So we have decided to initially charge £7.99 for registration and £6.99 for renewal every 2 years.
Included with every registration
Control panel that is fully functional and works in real time
Web Forwarding
Catch-all E-mail forwarding
Forwarding of up to 100 E-mail aliases
Change Name Servers
Change IPS Tag (UK domains only)
Change Contact Details
Full Domain Management Control
Modify DNS file
All domains are registered in your name
Everything clear and simple
No hidden charges!
Free Transfers
Internal Domain Transfers
Cancel a Domain Registration within 48 hours of the registration.
Comparison
Our Registrar : .com .net .org .biz .info .name - £7.99
UKReg : .com .net .org .biz .info .name - £10.57
123Reg : .com .net .org .biz .info .name - £21.12
* pricing is based on minimum total charges per registration.
(123Reg force a minimum 2 year registration)
So what do you guys think? I'd love to hear your comments.
roby2k 08-12-2002, 05:47 AM sounds quite good id get 1 coz i dont liek paying to transfere mine

Please post...:bawling:
ubergeek22 08-13-2002, 01:30 PM Is this xreg?
I may be wrong, but didn't you post a few weeks ago about this, but from a different view point?
The thread was deleted (I'd guess by the thread starter) when I said the site had been ripped off.
Apologies if I'm mistaken, but the £7.99 is familar...
blob2 08-13-2002, 03:27 PM First of all I did not start that thread and second I dont believe that thread was deleted.
Here, I found it http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=480367
Yes the site is xreg, but it has not launched yet - I'm involved in doing market research on the pricing structure, I'm just trying to gather opinions.
ubergeek22 08-13-2002, 03:44 PM I apologise for my mistake. :erm:, when I couldn't find it I thought it had been deleted.
I'm glad the design issues have been sorted, and I look foward to the launch. Your prices are excellent, and it's good you haven't taken the route of uk2 or 123reg, which can get rather confusing.
:)
blob2 08-13-2002, 05:25 PM Thanks for the support. In regards to design issues, that was between antoher site "vpod" and segpub. Nothing to do with xreg.
XReg has just been forwading to vpod for promotional issues until the launch of the site.
Philco 08-14-2002, 03:18 AM are you gonna be doing co.uk`s as well, if so how much?
sounds good, I was looking for a decent uk dns service and couldn`t find one that offered all the bells and whistles (apart from freeparking and they are a joke, based in the USA but can charge in pounds is hardly a uk dns service). Where are you based, are your dns servers in the uk also? Thanks.
Philco
blob2 08-14-2002, 05:29 AM All .uk names will be £7.99 for two years. But the price will be £6.99 for transfers from other registrars which will include a two year renewal.
We are based in the UK, but the service will accept and show price in either Euro/GBP/USD. It depends on what the user wants.
Our servers are in a US datacentre, so the DNS will be hosted in the US.
Does that answer your q?
UH-Matt 08-14-2002, 01:46 PM I would be interested in this as soon as possible, I dont min paying a little more than 123-reg for the .uk as you allow for 1 year registrations on the other tlds'
A good feature would be that ALL domains i register get put on my own nameservers straight away.. rather than me having to log back in once the registration is complete and change the nameserver.
Im looking right now for a central place to keep all my client domains and future registrations.. feel free to email me more info as and when you get it

blob2 08-14-2002, 02:46 PM H UH-Matt, thats good to hear :)
We are adding another feature called profiles, so in each profile you have your registration info/name servers etc... and so you can change your domains globally by selecting the profile you want to use with your selected names.
If you have a lot of domains, this would come in useful.
Would you be interested in some beta testing of our CP, we want to get this right the first time :)

I'd be interested too...
UH-Matt 08-14-2002, 03:42 PM Sure Im more than willing to help with any beta testing you might want me to do..
matt@unitedhosting.co.uk is my email address.
The profiles feature sounds good..
Could you have it so when i register a new domain it automatically uses my default profile for the nameservers etc.. this would save me from having to do anything once i have submitted the registration.
good luck
