View Full Version : How do I get a hostig provider to sponser my site?
Mac Write 03-06-2001, 05:03 AM I can't afford to run my site, due to being on goveremnt assistance (disability), and can't even afford the $15 (CDN)/month I am paying now to http://www.tera-byte.com.
I was sponsered last year (on a Mac hoster with MGI), but 2 problems, having to code for MGI is a pain in the ass, and I was given information about them that showed that they were not to be trusted, and also I paid them for a messga board, and it took repeated requests to set it up etc and 10-12 weeks to get it having paid over $100 (CDN) for a board that was total crap.
So I cut my losses, and moved to paid hosting (interland but just left cuase of major probems with them.
My site is http://www.macwrite.com
Hosts, if you want to sponser the site, please contact me.
Any idea how to get a sponser?
Fiber 03-06-2001, 05:49 AM Just start contacting host's yourself. Explain the situation, and tell them that you are willing to put a button, link, or banner on your site.

Duster 03-06-2001, 09:59 AM You might be thinking too small. You could try contacting Apple Computers regarding sponsorship. It's nothing to them and could nave some reciprocal benefits.
I would suggest going through every page with a spell checker first. Be sure to proofread it also, and/or have someone else proofread it. Besides spelling errors, there are capitalization and other errors.
They detract from the site and might impair sponsorship. Some sponsors might not want to be associated with a site that won't even use a spell checker to catch some of its mistakes, especially when the site deals with writing.
It's like a sign painter that has a crude sign for their own business. It does not inspire confidence or suggest a job well done.

Matrix 03-06-2001, 10:23 AM Another place to try would be http://www.sitepointforums.com/ and go down to the trading post area. Someone may trade web hosting in exchange for some banner exposure.
Mac Write 03-06-2001, 04:46 PM THanks for the input. I am also going to screeen anyone who wants to sponser the site very very carefully. I had major problems with the last one, and then to find out that they were not to be trusted at all (running 1 ISP under 4,5,6,10 names with different offerings).
I don't know if I should post who they are or not.
If you want to know the plans for the site, and how I will be generating traffic. Right now I am getting 100-200 pageviews just from the forums.
Just e-mail me. I am also going to be talking to my current host (who I just joined last week Tera-Byte.com) who are so far very good for the price.
SI-Chris 03-07-2001, 06:05 AM Instead of finding a host to sponsor you, why don't you put up some affiliate ads and make money with the thing? Then you can afford the $15 fee and have some left over to put in the bank. A decent listing on Yahoo! should generate enough traffic to pay for the site and more. Check out Commission Junction (http://www.cj.com); they're probably the easiest-to-use affiliate program around, and they let you select exactly what ads appear on your site.
Mac Write 03-07-2001, 07:13 AM Every site that I know of that uses affiliate programs, is lucky to get to the min amount in a 2-3 year period. I am a member of cj.com, amazon.com, linkshare.com, and I have never seen someone get prodcts throught the links.
The best way, is to make the site real good, and then go after places to advertise on the site. That is the only garrentied way to make money.
SI-Chris 03-07-2001, 07:33 PM I think the people that aren't making money are those that put up a Web page with a bunch of affiliate links and zero content. I have a site with a few dozen pages of Web design tips, and about half a dozen links to Comission Junction affiliates on every page (text links--those work the best--and not banners). This site averages $130/month. I'm not going to get rich obviously, but it helps pay the bills. MacWrite.com looks to me like it's got the quality to make some money (as I said, not a lot, but probably enough to pay a $15 hosting bill). And as I've said, a good listing on Yahoo! will do wonders to bring in traffic. It doesn't cost anything to sign up with Comission Junction, so it might be worth your while to look into it. If it works you'd certainly have a lot more freedom in choosing a host for your site.
