Can someone please explain what a link bait is...From the beggining please.
Where is it meant to link to. Do you put a link in an article or is the article link bait itself?

What are all those links in an article that seem to go nowhere? Are these the keywords?

People have all sorts of definitions, but linkbait is generally a type of article or website that has pretty useful information that everyone is interested in linking to. Usually artificially created. Some people consider a press release a form of link bait.

I saw a reference to Mashable earlier, where they have a top ten list of new sites to check out. Bloggers and writers are usually very excited to link to these sort of things. People won't link to them though if they're not interesting or relevant.

So your saying a great article or blog post is link bait because people want to link to it? I would love to have one of those..

Exactly, that's why it's "bait..." people want it. I should also be a bit more clear that usually the person who is trying to build up their SEO creates the link bait themselves or an SEO firm does it.

Obviously it would be great if CNN wrote about you in a top ten list, but that's not likely to happen. So creating valuable content yourself that people want to link to can be very helpful.

It's also important to remember that when done poorly, it's usually pretty obvious.
