Hi all,

I am a IT freelancer..because i have web projects every now and then. I feel like signup for some resller package and offering webhosting to my clients.

Is this a viable profit venture?

I am a singaporean and i thought this reseller plan was nice

http://frro.net/index.php

any comments? and do you all encourage reseller hosting? I just want something that can generate some passive incomes for me.

and how do you all market webhosting?

Many web developers resell hosting to their development clients. It's a perfect fit for a web developer or an "IT freelancer", that can make a nice little income on the side of your main business. I know some developers who have 100+ clients and supply hosting to all their clients too, and have nice recurring incomes from not only site maintenance, but also from the hosting. Hosting and web development go hand in hand.

You could also add domain names into the mix too. The 3 products work very well together, and you're infact offerring the full scope of products to your client, rather than having them pay for hosting and a domain elsewhere. This way you have more control and can offer a better product and inturn make more money.

I wouldn't use such an expensive company... but it depends where your priorities are. Without evaluating their uptime and support, its hard to say if those plans are worth the money. You can definitely find a better deal though.

Not only is it a way for you to make money, it's a way of providing one-stop service to your customers, who are likely to be happy to have you - whom they already know and trust - take care of all their web needs.

As for not using them because they are too expensive, I strongly disagree. You are going to be much much better off overpaying for something than risking getting poor service. I'm betting you get a lot of clients from word of mouth, and even if you do great design work, if there are serious hosting problems then they are likely to speak poorly of you and if you have returning clients they are likely not to return.

My suggestion, do offer hosting to your clients, but don't skimp on the hosting account. My guess is you don't really want to do much in the hosting field which is fine, but you need to make sure you have a quality host.

There is a reseller forum here at WHT
You could also do a search here at WHT
and within the 'offers section' there are reseller offers.

And Yes Don't skimp on the price if you want to sleep well, equaly don't just go for the most expensive.
You maybe, also need to consider location, support and time zones.
[Aussie Bob / dotable has a good reputation here, and is in your 'part of the world', nearly]

Don't rush, or youl have the fun of 'changing hosts' nobody likes that experience.

10gb/75gb for $4? I would never sign up with a host offering those specs. It is simply not viable. If uptime, reliability, support is not a problem, and you wouldn't mind if they disappear tomorrow, then it may be ok for you.

You need a budget of at least $15 to $20 to get a decent reseller account. Providing reseller accounts is totally different from normal single account.

Most freelancers do that and it's a nice way to earn some extra income apart from your main source of income. Starting with a reseller will also give you a taste of what you need to do and help build a customer database.

Well there seems to be some things that leap out re. optical-hosting's web site that would concern me:
monthly 10gb reseller plan, offered at BOTH $3.95 and $15.95
[not sure if they'd honour the cheaper price, maybe a typo, a big typo].
BIG BUT the order link is not workig anyway.

re server location, this depends on many things, for many the major consideration is the location Not of your clients, but of your clients customers.
There are other issues, speed for you, your client, your clients customers,
Search engine/google, etc.

If your starting out, maybe go for one of the better known hosts, who may be more reliable & more supportive.

just some thoughts.

Do it. I work In house and Freelance. In both of those roles Hosting is provided and the customers love it.

If you've made a good design for someone they will usually asume that your hosting is as good as your coding.

Don't bite off more than you can chew though, you don't want 400 mission critical web sites under your supervision, do you? ;)

If no-one is replying you can safely bet that they have nothing more to say. Prompting for more comments just gets annoying.

I do a lot of web development projects on the side and it is very convenient that I am simultaneously running a web hosting business. About half of web project clients do not have hosting plans and will simply opt for what I can offer them.
