View Full Version : First server ever,, at Fastservers.net
I just purchased my very first server. I descided to go with fastservers.net since im a complete newbie and everyone has been bragging about their support..
All i can say is WOW! I have no idea what im doing,, but they have answered all of my questions and completed all setup and fixes extremely fast..
They answer their emails so fast on some days they might as well just use instant messaging..
sitekeeper 08-11-2002, 12:45 PM Great!
Please keep us posted on how things go. A lot of companies like leasing server to Newbies but not supporting them. I am glad to hear something other then horror stories.
Good Luck!
UmBillyCord 08-11-2002, 01:04 PM The thing I find odd about these guys is that they are affraid to *name* their connections.
http://web.fastservers.net//network/
Anyone care to guess who they use? Do a trace to their core web site, it shows numerous non-labeled reverses, so it is hard to tell.
Can you give us a name of a site you host with them or let me know if they are 100% Cogent or what they use. Looking at that network maps gives me a good idea, but reading their text, it sounds like they have BGP to redundancy, etc...... Seems like smoke and mirrors to me. With other providers, they tell you who you are connected to.
isildur 08-11-2002, 01:07 PM We have made it quite clear (here on WHT and abroad) that we are proud to use HE.net (www.he.net), and their connectivity which is a mere gigabit ethernet hop away from MAE West, in San Jose.
:D
Definitely not the evil watered down bandwidth you are speaking of.
UmBillyCord 08-11-2002, 01:12 PM Well, since most people will find a web site from other then WHT or these "other" locations, I really fail to see why you do not just tell us on your web site? Any reason?
Also, I know you colo at HE, but they let you bring in your own BW. So it could be Cogent. That was my guess at those prices. ;)
Samuel 08-11-2002, 01:34 PM No cogent here =)
Umbillycord: Im 45 miles from the datacenter, and when I moved my services to that datacenter I was actively receiving traceroutes from my customers in different parts of the world and not one time did it route through cogent.
Just offering some "Useful" information.

Thanks. I am sure the minute someone questions something here it is a flame. But to me it is rediculous for a Colo/ded server provider to not list their connections. Guess it is just me.
Samuel 08-11-2002, 01:47 PM Yea I know what you're talking about, but really I was just offering some useful information from direct experience.
It wasn't a comment towards you, really.
In other words, I don't have a problem with your posts.

fastservers_net 08-11-2002, 03:47 PM Greetings:
To be honest without any smoke and mirrors most people including our Network Administrator had never hear of Cogent until the members of this board began to ask us if we used "Cogent Bandwidth".
The Data Center that we are in (Hurricane Electric) www.he.net gets connectivity from the Media Fiber Network (www.mfn.com) which is the MAE-WEST Backbone peering point in San Jose. We have updated the site to include who he.net and mfn.com peer with.
FastServers.Net is (he.net's) largest customer, consuming more space and utilizing more bandwidth than any other customer including their own dedicated hosting division. I would challenge anyone to give them a call and compare services, you will be most surprised.
Our prices are based on a number of factors including the bulk in which we buy bandwidth, the floor space we lease from he.net and most importantly the low overhead we maintain. One of the things we do not fall short on in the support and service. The recent influx in our service has caused us to evaluate and fulfill a few holes in our company to provider the highest quality of support and servers at a competitive price.
UmBillyCord 08-11-2002, 06:57 PM I have never heard anything bad about HE. I am sure that if we ever grew tired of where we have been for more then three years, HE would be our next choice.

Fastsevers Network page says dual OC3 connections.
Fastsevers Network map says Gigabit ethernet connections.
Could you explain your backbone?
1Gigabit ethernet from MAE-West in San Jose and 1Gigabit ethernet from PAIX in Palo Alto?
