chundle 08-11-2002, 06:24 AM hi folks
i'm running like cat on fire from featureprice and looking for a new host (for multiple domains). i've narrowed it down to 4 possibilities any comments on the following:
1. dreamhost.com
2. insiderhosting.com
3. icdsoft.com (not multiple, but quite inexpensive)
4. dot5hosting.com
i've searched the forum and found a few passing comments on some of them, but not quite enough FORs or AGAINSTs, so any opinions would be gratefully received.
thank you all!
Hello,
Have a heard about dreamhost and dot5hosting.
I guess dot5hosting shouldn't be bad, have read here around the threads that people are happy with them.
Bye fullstop
.
sparrow 08-11-2002, 07:56 AM I am with dot5hosting and am a very satisifed customer. They had my site up in just a few hours and their tech and service have been very prompt to answer any questions that I had. I would not hesitate to recommend them.
BTW before someone comments that I seem like someone else.Chicken helped me to correct my email and account (My other posts were as sparrow8)

I'm not sure what it means because their own site seems to be up and running, as are some of the clients i checked. thanks for any pointers.
Rochen 08-11-2002, 02:42 PM Out of the few hosts listed (there are of course more) but I would recommend Insider Hosting, for the simple reason I had a dealing with Steven regarding one of his customers infringing our copyright and he dealt with it in a prompt manner. I am not saying the rest wouldn't, but I haven't had any personal experience with them.
Evenstar 08-11-2002, 02:46 PM according to a friend whom i haven't talk to for ages, Dreamhost has good uptime and fast support except they are kinda expensive (to her in the least) if i am not mistaken, i think they also have a referral program or something.
chundle 08-12-2002, 03:06 AM Any takers on icdsoft? I like the simplicity of their plan, but haven't heard anything back from their sales dept, which isn't a good sign.
I'm leaning towards dreamhost since they've been around the longest...
TheMMIz 08-12-2002, 05:13 AM Ive used DreamHost, and they are one of the 'ole timers in the hosting business. They offer great services at a great price. Do a search on the forums about them, they dont come up often, but its always been positive. Good luck finding the right host :)

HK based company. You might want to double check their speed since they put all their servers into one of HK ISP.
puggy106 08-12-2002, 10:10 AM We have a firewal installed on our server.
chundle 08-12-2002, 03:41 PM thanks for the info, folks

in reference to my question about the timeout? is it the firewall that prevents the trace from completing? thank you for taking the time to answer...
ChickenSteak 08-12-2002, 03:49 PM I recommend Dot5. As I've talked to the owners before, and they seem very professional, and kind.
So, dot5 is the way to go, also there aren't any complaints about dot5, accept complaints of other host's that get jealous, they don't have customers who come here, and post how good there service, is.
:agree: Dot5hosting
the-muse 08-12-2002, 05:23 PM insiderhosting.com
DomineauX 08-18-2002, 03:38 AM Just wanted to let you know about the Timeouts when
performing a Traceroute on any of the Dot5hosting.com servers.
The servers are configured with Firewalls which do not allow ICMP
Packets (PING, Traceroute, etc..) to come through.
(Imagine trying to rob a bank that is invisible)
This is of course for additional security. After all, everyone should
realize that servers used for webhosting, especially well known
Web Hosting Companies, are huge targets for hacking.
I know this, because I am the Systems Administrator for Dot5.
You would be surprised how many packets I have logged from
our competitors, which seem very obviously like backdoor checks.
I wont name any of these competitors, but I will say that our
servers get more port scanning attempts from other hosting
companies, than from all of Europe and Asia combined.
Regards,
Tony Kammerer
jim579 11-16-2002, 10:18 AM I used dreamhost and suffered. If you enjoy unnecessary pain, go for it.

:agree: Dot5hosting Could be because of posts like yours.
Do you have an account with them?
If not; how can you recommend without experience?
puggy106 11-16-2002, 01:53 PM Lets not let this thread turn into something like a few others have done.
TheMMIz 11-16-2002, 04:15 PM jim579,
Im not sure why you are going around and bringing back three month old threads and posting one-liners about DreamHost. If you feel you have been wronged, contact their admin and see if you can work things out, but spamming every DreamHost thread with your issue wont work.

I used dreamhost a couple years ago. Reliability and performance were great. Pricewise, you can do better.
The biggest problem with Dreamhost (IMO) is their tight limitation on the number of domains you can host. For their $9.95 plan, you're allowed only one domain. You should be able to find a reliable host for less than $10/month that allows unlimited domains, or at least a few dozen.
