Guess everyone is serious nowadays...

Here is a puzzle:

An old man died and he left in his last will and testament to wit:

"I will divide my 11 cars to my 3 sons. The oldest will get 1/2 of it.
The middle will get 1/4 and the youngest will get 1/6. It has to be divided such that no complaint shall be coming from each one."

Now, if you are the lawyer, how will you go about dividing the cars?

All get their percent rounded up, so even though the three parts didn't totaly 100%, the three will get all the cars and all will get more (in partial cars) that technically required.

Actually you need not to round up.
You can see the problem in different way. The middle and youngest should get 1/2 and 1/3 as many cars as the oldest respectively.

Hence, 6, 3, 2 does solve the problem.

Hehehe. :) But 6 is not 1/2 of eleven! 1/2 of 11 is only 5 1/2. If I am the middle child I will complain. :) It is not fair.

Well, you might have seen it on our design reseller's or partner's webpages? I can assure you that the logo comes from us orginally. :)

It was requested by Dane Paz, the owner of First Ant Network through our free logo and banner design promo way back then here in WHT.

I don't remember any, but feel free to show me a list of your design resellers (never heard of a design reseller.. heh.) or partners and ill see if that was were i saw it.

Well, we do have design resellers or partners and they are supposed to be anonymous.

Basically, the portfolios to be displayed on their website will be the ones we design out of their orders. But, if they use the logos from our website, it is their prerogative. Yet, we still have to find out if they are really our partners. Otherwise, they are claiming something which is not theirs!

So if you happen to see it again, please do tell us. We don't give out our list of partners. Sorry.

EDIT: By the way, the answer of Incognito is almost correct, but there is something to be done by the lawyer first so that the number of cars match exactly the fraction of the total cars.

Oddly, someone asked me this question just a week ago, though it was with cows, not cars. Answer is still the same :D

Confuses many people as they get thrown by 1/2 of 11 and feel that he should get 1/2 of the total and that the he's getting more than the others (6 does not equal 3+2, thus it isn't 1/2).

You know what the lawyer should do then? Here is my thought:

The lawyer should borrow another car to make the total to 12 cars.

Then, the following are the shares:

1/2 of 12 is 6 (that will make the eldest son happy since it is more than one-half of 11 which is 5 1/2).

1/4 of 12 is 3 (that is more than 2 3/4 which is 1/4 of 11. so the middle son is happy too.)

1/6 of 12 is 2 (definitely greater than 1 5/6 which is 1/6 of 11. so no complaint from the young one).

After they get all their share, they all have a total of 11 cars. The lawyer keeps the remaining car and return it from where he borrow!

Incognito does got it almost right. He just missed the point what the lawyer should do to make the division of the cars easy.

In the real world all your answers are wrong.

The real solution would be worked out like this:

The lawyer keeps all the cars and sends a bill to each of the brothers for his services.
The government taxes each of the brothers the full value of all 11 cars.

As 6, 3, 2, is the correct divy of amounts, the only other thing I can see is the order of selection. The order would be one car at a time going from; youngest, middle, oldest, for 2 selections. Then middle picks another car and the remaining 4 go to the oldest.

Can't be much fairer than that!
