I have a site from which I derive a good chunk of my income. The owner of the hosting company is becoming difficult, and I can't afford to have him simply dump my site.

Right now I'm on a semi-dedicated Windows server. My site uses 40-70 GB's of bandwidth per month, maybe two gigs of storage, gets 250,000 to 300,000 visitors a month with 1,000,000+ page views per month.

I'm using a SQL Server 2000 database, ASPUpload and ASPJpeg (I have the licenses), AWStats, a control panel for mail and database, and a few other extras.

I need reliable hosting, at least 99.5% uptime, tech support via email or phone, and no server slowdowns. All of that didn't seem like too much to ask for, but the owner of the hosting company seems to think so, and wants me to provide him with $400 a month worth of SEO services. What's more, he's claiming that I owe him 12-18 months of SEO services already. That's $4800 to $7200 worth of services he wants me to commit to providing him now, in addition to what's ahead.

At any rate, I need to find another company, and fast. Any suggestions?

I have been checking, and am continuing to check. Just looking for a suggestion from someone who's happy with his/her current host.

I wish I'd found this forum months ago!

Check out xcelservers.com. I've been with them for over four months now. The live support is top notch and they were gracious enough to give me a coupon. I am fairly sure that they can set you up with a dedicated/semi-dedicated server with minimal fuss.

Good luck with your search!

Right now I'm pretty much stuck with paying $50 to $75 a month for hosting. I'd love to do a dedicated server, but the $$$ isn't there.

I've looked around this forum, and HostMySite.com seems to get favorable reviews, so I contacted them. I talked to someone in tech support first, as I didn't want to hear promises from a sales person that the company couldn't meet.

The tech guy suggested VPS hosting. The sales guy said either VPS or shared hosting. My concern is that bandwidth for either would be insufficient, and my site would get bogged down.

The sales guy assured me that with their multiple T-1 connections there would be no problems. But the company I'm with now has multiple T-1 connections, and they felt it necessary to move my site to a semi-dedicated server.

Any thoughts on this?

I'm renting a dedicated P4 HT 2.8GHz 2.5TB for just $39 from OLM (via serveraday.com). Very good server and network. I think sagonet.com also offers servers under $50 at their Tampa and Atlanta data centers. And The Planet offers P4 2.8GHz premium 750GB W2K3 STD for $69. At these prices a VPS is not that good deal.

dotHostel, I know just enough about running a server to know that I don't know enough about running servers.

Before that it was March of 2007. If you've had that domain with them for just 4 months, why does the whois only show November (that would be just 2 months)?

Sorry i wasn't clear. I had used them under a subdomain and was trying their service out. They offered to let me run a subdomain to see if it would work out between us two. In the end, I thought it was worth it so I went ahead and went for a yearly plan.

Not to be picky, but do you have any proof of that as well? If you're claiming ~4 months, and you're doing so all over the forum, we should expect some verifiable evidence, especially since it's relatively unlikely any host would let you test their service for two months before signing up.
Anything?

The problem isn't the available bandwidth - the only real limit you'll see on shared or dedicated is the 100 Mbps switch port the server(s) are connected to. The problem is a matter of server performance; i.e. how well can the shared or VPS handle your application at those bandwidth levels. Every environment has it's quirks, and I'm sure our VPS is setup different from your current host, so I can't give you any real answer as to whether or not it would function properly.

I would suggest trying this with the highest level VPS plan (the 1 GB ones) since they have the best performance to see how it runs. If nothing else there's a 30 day money back guarantee if your app turns out to be a major resource hog and/or simply not function correctly in the VPS environment.

Also, for clarification we don't have multiple T-1 connections, we have multiple gigabit connecitons. ;-)
