View Full Version : Life after AWH.. need host
smperik 08-10-2002, 10:25 PM So then... I seem to have violated terms with AWH for having the ultimatebb.cgi and they closed my board down without notice. Said it was against the rules.
However :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:
Ok, back together a bit.. sorry.
Ok, well I have PHP enabled on the UBB and my clients LOVE IT (sorry vb, phpbb, and such). So although leaving UBB is out (and i believe with the PHP Accelerator hack (which enables mucho PHP base - and big speed lift)) I have to find a new place to move to.
sniff. SO... I know that probably good hosting providers will think Im the devil if i come with a UBB (no matter what i tell them). ANYONE know of ANYWHERE i can go (other than a joe sunshine $5/month co). I want LONG TERM.
Sigh, for those of you WITHOUT UBB, check ronnie out at AlwaysWebHosting
But for me.. please... I NEEDIN HELP!
I'm A Christian Web Director (non-profit) and would love some reliability, as I've jumped from 3 different hosts within the past 30 days (yeah, bumpy ride). AWH, was a nice jump, didnt expect to have to leave. :eek2: Perhaps some of you AWH owners can help me out. I need good alternatives!! And whatever you post, you better believe i'll be checking out in the search area (praise God for those search sections... but everyone seems to have dirt on everyone).
WHT addicts - I would love your opinion.. you've been here the longest .... also, please understand im kind of obligated to stay with UBB, so dont waste my time telling me to change
smperik 08-10-2002, 11:23 PM anyone ?

Did you read their TOS/AUP before you signed up?
UBB is horrible, however you do it. Why can't you just switch?
ShagHost 08-10-2002, 11:32 PM Thou shalt not use Ultimatebb, says the Web Host.
:smokin:
Jedito 08-10-2002, 11:34 PM I'm not saying that you have to switch to VB (althrough I recommend to do it), but if you're interested, VB have a UBB --> VB migration script.

No, i must have overlooked the TOS because i didnt know UBB was 'DA DEVIL' ;) I would switch, but after donors and such put money to help us get the UBB and all the time i put into it making it speed effecient, it's just fine to me. That.. and really... the users love it (and its blossoming). I'm considering making the switch in the future, but not ASAP, ya know. :D I wish I would have known that UBB wasnt the only option from the beggining though.
Anyway, i still need alternatives.
jayjay 08-10-2002, 11:38 PM I'm not knocking on hosts that allow UBB, but anyone in their right mind and knows what their doing.. will not allow it. Just know that. (Although I'm sure there's someone out there that wants your money and doesn't care... there ALWAYS is.)
smperik 08-10-2002, 11:42 PM granted... if i can only find that reliable server that will tolerate me until i make a decision to transfer
Jedito 08-10-2002, 11:47 PM Try on the "Web Hosting Requests" Forum (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=32)
I saw the most incredible request getting an offer there.

hostingmatters.com

Jedito 08-11-2002, 02:12 AM Hostculture do not allow UBB, sorry :(
smperik 08-11-2002, 02:20 AM yeah, i discovered that too... i was so close to go with them too

Thats how hosts have reliable servers, they dont allow such resource-intensive scrips as UBB.
On the same note, if I didnt already have five web hosts, I would be with HostCulture, I hear they have quality servers and bandwidth.
Good luck with your search though, and I hope you find a host that meets your needs :)

How many simultaneous users/posts per day do you get?
AceWeb 08-11-2002, 06:21 PM Can you just tell me why are you bound to UBB? Just want to know.

clients love it, donors helped get me the site and the only other alternative i'll take is VB.
HOWEVER.. after talking with a few different host providers, i finally went with one that was EXTREMEMLY nice, helped me out with every problem i could imagine (as well as with questions) and i dont think i could have had a smoother transfer. He said he's had no problem with the server i would be on, and if i got to be a pain, that he would let me know and we would work out a solution (what a nice guy)... however, the long run will be interesting, but with support like that (and him willing to tolerate me with what i have)... im enjoying it.
Praise God, someone even made me an offer to purchase a VB license completely for only $50 (yes, it's legit). So, now i think im going to try it out on the side and see if i can transfer my UBB with the VB script.
Anyhoot.. curious who this host is?
www.sarvihosting.com
Thank you for all of your help!
PS> we really only get 4 simultaneous users on our peak times and have PHP accelerator enabled.. so it's really not a heavy burden
TheMMIz 08-12-2002, 05:27 AM smperik,
I took the time to type out a longish reply to your original post hoping you would take a few minutes to do some research. Just doing a WHOIS on the domain name Sarvihosting, one can see that it was registered in mid February. And that doesnt even account for how long he has been in business, most people dont open shop the same day they buy a domain. Seeing all the problems you have had in the past, I would think you would want to go with a reliable host that has been around for more than five months.
I could be wrong though, and wish you the best of luck with your new host. Keep us updated.
smperik 08-12-2002, 09:49 AM well, i believe his first host link was at sarvi.com, but am not sure and that was opened in 2000. And I could be wrong... but what he has offered and such and the type of service he has (even if it's just kicking off) has been remarkable. I'm moving to a resellers account with them and hopefully your wrong and things continue to go well with him. I have faith.
Thank you for your concern (and i'll be aware of that.. i did take you advice in account though as I made my searches).
Thank you :)
PS> I guess a big reason why i like it so, is that him and his website is AUTHENTIC... he's real and genuine and replies to all my emails (even on a sunday) within 5 minutes (i know its not gonna happen all the time.. but it was something I liked most of all)!

Actually, we were an Internet developer (webdesign, programming, database, etc) company before we got into web hosting. We have been hosting our clients (unoffically) for 2 years now and decided to open an official website for our hosting business last year. The domains we started out with were "AmazonHosting.com/.net". Later in 2002 we decided to stick with the "Sarvi" names which is why we registered "SarviHosting.com" and sold "AmazonHosting.com/.net". As you probably noticed, we are not going after being "cheapest" in this business, but put all our efforts towards support and quality instead. Which is why our servers are in the wold-class NAC datacenter instead of one of $100/mo 500GB server datacenters (i.e. DV2 or RackShack).
If you have any questions that I have missed to answer above, feel free to contact me personally and I'll gladly answer all your questions.
PS. smperik thank you for your kind words
Cheers.
phantasywork 09-05-2002, 01:18 AM I think people read too much into the whois information on a domain personally ;) cause Like (SH)Saeed we did bussiness under a diffrent domain cause we didnt really offer webhosting to the public , we did design, programing and hosted a few clients. Then we decided after almost 2 yrs to make the plunge into webhosting ( my partner and I )
(SH)Saeed 09-05-2002, 03:56 PM Douglas,
The problem is that hosts here spend way too much time trying to find dirt on other hosts to trash them and they wouldn't pass up an oppertunity to jump to a conclusion without knowing all the facts first if it helps them. Instead of putting that time into their own company and taking care of their clients the best they can, they're worried about the success of other hosts.
(PS. This is my personal and general observation and not towards anyone specific.)
eddy2099 09-05-2002, 08:33 PM One alternative could be to move to the Freeware PhpBB which seems to be quite acceptable by AWH.
Geek3 09-05-2002, 10:01 PM Me likes PHPBB
