What would you recommend. Renew your domain every year or purchase it every 5 years or 10 years. As of now i am renewing it every year.

But i am planning on moving hosts next year. Would registering it for 10 years with the host that i am with now be a waste of money. Because i would have to transfer it over to a different host

Why do you have to move your domain everytime you change host? unless you register your domain through your current hosting compnay.
Why don't you just move your domain over to companies like godaddy so when you do decide to change web host, you just need to update your DNS info.

I agree with rois. You should always keep your domain separate from your host. GoDaddy, Moniker, NameCheap, any company will do. If it's a name you plan to hang onto for a while, and you don't have many domain names, registering it for 10 years and letting it sit is perfectly fine :)

I should always keep my domain seperate from my host?? What does this mean. And why?

Ok this is my situation. An example

I have mysite.com with aplus.net and my hosting with aplus.net

Except aplus.net has bad customer service and bad service in general.

I am planning on moving to go daddy. Should i keep my domains with aplus and

get hosting with godaddy? Or should i move everything including my domains

to godaddy.

Whats my best bet.

IMO, the reason to keep it separate is that should something go sour with your host, you can just jump ship to another host and your website will have minimal downtime. And always try to have your domain with a reputable registrar.

So your advice is keep the domain with aplus and hosting with go daddy?

No go out of aplus.net they are awful. As example, go domain to namecheap.com and host with godaddy or viceversa.

I don't think there would be any problem even you register domain name through the host.

Do never register your domain with your host!

Register your domains with good registrars only. namecheap.com, enom.com, godaddy.com etc.

Get your hosting wherever you want, but NOT your domain registrar.

hi, my advice, right.
transfer domain to namecheap, godaddy maybe -
and have total control over them, some people may not beleive what i have to say but...
this is by far not the last time you will change your hosting service.
trust me!
you can then host wherever its best for you, and happily transfer names to where ever you need ok.
for hosting godaddy sucks. ej.

Imho it's not such an important thing to always separate them. If you have overall positive experience with a certain registrar, why not to host with them either? Or do you think that if you host with your registrar, you will have problems when switching to another registrar? Well, a bad registrar can cause a headache wherever your site is hosted.
