View Full Version : Hosting a gaming server on a vps?
dan289 01-04-2008, 09:38 PM Hello, I am looking to host a 16-slot counter strike: source server along with a teamspeak and a few websites.
Would I be able to do this on a vps or would I need a dedicated server?
and what sort of spec would I need?
thanks.
bizness 01-04-2008, 09:47 PM gaming server == high CPU == high resources != good idea on a shared system like a VPS.... just my 1 cent
omega36 01-04-2008, 09:49 PM You could do it... just depends on the provider - some allow game servers, some don't.
XeHSean 01-04-2008, 10:15 PM Many of them do not allow game servers, so make sure that you ask the provider before you purchase the package ;)
Mr. Obvious 01-05-2008, 02:03 AM I know Joe at creativeVPS has been running a test CS:S server, it was running fine for me :D
Bryce|C 01-05-2008, 02:07 AM I currently have a Windows VPS and am running a cs:cz server on it, which is a little less demanding, but I can run 2-3 servers on it, they all run pretty smoothly for being on a VPS.
I would still recommend trying to get a dedicated server, try and find someone interested in the same thing as you and see if they would be willing to share a dedicated server, that can work out nicely if you can trust the other person.
HG-Daniel 01-05-2008, 03:19 AM Its possible but I personally wouldn't recommend it. Depending on the activity of the websites and game server I would say a Core2Duo with 2gb of RAM would be enough, if you were to go with a dedicated server.
LargeServer 01-05-2008, 06:24 AM In persoanlly, i would recommend you to run your "low usage" game with VPS but if it goes popular then you might need to consider upgrading your VPS to dedicated.
Adam H 01-05-2008, 08:40 AM Ive run a 20 man 100tick Counter-Strike: Source server on a 512mb VPS before fine.
Looie 01-05-2008, 11:34 AM Have a look on CheapVPS
http://cheapvps.co.uk/plans/high-spec
These are our higher specification VPSs that guarantee a large share of the resources and are suitable for those that require the power similar to that of a dedicated server but without the cost. We host no more than 4 VPSs per node.
1.4Ghz guaranteed, 5.6Ghz burst
jtodd 01-05-2008, 01:58 PM We've got a few clients who run small game servers from their VPSs and thus far have reported the performance to be good.
JordanJ 01-05-2008, 04:57 PM It will be fine, but dont expect to run a 500-100 fps server from one.
infinite_in 01-08-2008, 07:28 AM I think its better to go for dedicated.
Spartanfrog 01-08-2008, 04:57 PM Dedicated.
We don't allow gameservers on a vps without writting permission. ;) They cause a high load on the server, and since we don't cap the cpu, other customers won't like it.
JohnJ 01-09-2008, 09:23 PM If it were just a game server that you wanted to host on a VPS, you might not have problems. However, in my experience there is no way that you can put a game server, voice server, and a few websites on a single VPS. That is just asking for high loads and a lot of downtime.
BrianFarrell 01-10-2008, 04:26 AM I think a dedicated solution, even a cheap one, would be better off for you. You can get a much better gaming experience without a major dent to the checkbook
blessen 01-10-2008, 06:37 PM Game server demands heavy resources. Hence a dedicated server will be the best choice.
p3terpan 01-10-2008, 09:09 PM You will need a dedicated server for sure. Make sure you get ALOT of bandwith.
proclanh 01-10-2008, 10:32 PM Its possible but I personally wouldn't recommend it. Depending on the activity of the websites and game server I would say a Core2Duo with 2gb of RAM would be enough, if you were to go with a dedicated server.
He wants to run a 16 slot cs server (prolly 100tic),ts server and a few web sites. He's not going to need a dual core dedicated server. Your talking 150-250 slots on a server that size. Like somebody already posted find a provider that will allow the game on the vps and get a vps. It's much cheaper and will perform just fine.

You'd be surprised how much an 100tick server takes up. It also it depends the size of the websites. For all we know he has pretty active site(s) and will not only have to worry about the load, but the bandwidth as well. And generally, VPS don't come with substantial amounts of bandwidth (when compared to dedicated servers).
Of course he can run it on a VPS, but like I said, I personally wouldn't recommend it. I recommended the Core2Duo so he has a decent amount of space to expand his game servers and websites later on. A single processor/core dedicated server would also suit his needs if price was an issue.
