I was just wondering about choosing the perfect CMS. Appending to CMS Matrix (cmsmatrix.org/matrix/cms-matrix?func=viewRatingDetails)
ELGG is currently on top. The thing that really counts in my case is security, good managment and easiness of customizing the graphic interface. So i would like to ask the community here, what's your opinion (since it would be my first CMS so far)? Also anyone know any good shared hosting offers with ELGG inside? Thanks.

P.S Or maybe mostly i'm obliged to install any CMS-of-choice on my web-account? Or this quite depends on the vendor?

I too really enjoy CMS Made Simple... it is not bloated and gets the job done...

HOWEVER

I am a Wordpress freak... I use it for everything! You can turn WP into anything you want! I highly suggest Wordpress.

drupal is flexible but need some learning curve to get yourself familiar with it, but once you have master it, you can use it to build any type of website.

I agree... Drupal is my 3rd choice...

Last on my list is Joomla and Mambo...

I prefer Wordpress over everything though.

Joomla and Drupal, share no 1 & 2 on my list, can't decide which one is the best, both has its own pros and cons. Also the winners of packtpub award for cms.
Wordpress is my no 3

What about security issues, have you got any problems with that? Incidents, attacks or something?

The Joomla one was with mambo, and got defaced once by a Turkey script kiddies, never again in Joomla. and never with drupal/wordpress

I do know someone who used Joomla and had there site defaced...

TextPattern seems pretty interesting... I am going to add it to my 5 page list of things to do/try... I have the hardest time finishing projects, I always move on to something else and come back to it later

have to say, e107 would be my fav cms, really easy to use, which is a big plus for me cause im not that great at stuff like design

There are no security issues with Joomla - As long as you keep it up-to-date (as one should with all software) your good to go - When you say you saw some defaced Joomla site that is more than probably due to some badly made third party plugin installed on the site (or of course a badly maintained server itself)

Joomla itself is a rock solid foundation that out of the box works great. They actively develop and maintain it and are very proactive with security updates. When people say defacing it makes me think of the likes of PHPBB which is a world away from Joomla in respect of security (excluding PHPBB3 as I've not used that yet).

I've had around 12 Joomla sites over time, one was extremely popular - I only had one security issue ever and that was due to a poorly made Plugin.

Last time I checked WordPress is blogging software and not actually natively a CMS - That is not to say people don't hook a load of extensions in to it to give it the functionaly of a comprehensive CMS, but I wouldn't say it's a CMS out of the box - It handles the publication of articles extremely well but comparing it to the likes of ELGG / ExpressionEngine / Joomla / Drupal is wrong IMO.

As far as commercial CMS's go, in my person oppinion you'd be hard pressed to find a better CMS than ExpressionEngine.

It seems ExpressionEngine is not really free :(

No, hence the "commerical" comment :) BUT...There is the "core" version, which is indeed free. Give it a shot see if you like it. The core version is pretty similiar to the paid for version, just less features.

I vote for Drupal out of my in depth experience on using Wordpress, PostNuke, Xoops, and Joomla.

Like other said the learning curve is harsh but it pays off. Now I can use the same script for both of my tiny customers (needing only few dozens practically static pages) and the big ones (full e-commerce+blog+forum functioning).

I also use CMS Made Easy, it is easy to setup and you do not have to have too much experience to use it.
