View Full Version : Where do you work from?
UktopHost 08-09-2002, 02:12 PM Hello everyone,
I am just wondering where you all work from, Home or office. If Office do you own it or rent it. If you work at home what would you say are the major drawbacks.

The Laughing Cow 08-09-2002, 02:28 PM Well, you know me and I work from home... Wait ... I don't have a job :(
But I do website development from home and used to run a hosting business too.
Advantages are - relaxed atmosphere, all you can drink/eat.
No cost for traveling to work.
Disadvantages are - Can look unprofessional especially for interviewing people and a business address just looks better.
tazd9t9 08-09-2002, 02:57 PM Home but i have it like an office to make myself work
Both...
I do the majority of my work from a home office. It is a separate addition to our home so that helps a great deal.
Advantages: More time with my family, comfortable environment, ability to put in more hours as well as the ability to take more breaks ;)
Disadvantages: I get out less, a bit more difficult to explain to friends/family that you are "not home" because you are "at work", it puts new meaning to being on-call.
There is also an office attached to our Data Center. When I have to work there I do, but I avoid it as much as possible ;) It does help to have it available for meetings etc with others. I hope to turn it into more Data Center space someday ;)
Home... because, the company I work for is across the country... :)

mwatkins 08-09-2002, 03:11 PM Home. Initially perhaps there were some "appearances" disadvantages when marketing to clients, but frankly I think that was mostly an issue in our heads (me and my partners). We don't think twice about it and we run a significant consulting business from our home offices, dealing with nothing but large organizations as clients.
Its all in the work you do and the presentation you put forth to them. Since we travel to our clients offices 95% of the time, its never been an issue. For a hosting company, I can't imagine it being an issue.
And if you are marketing value added services (not just commodity hosting), then prepare to be up front with your local clients rather than risk them asking 'where is your data centre' and having to hum and haw about it.
After all, if you can't explain what your value add is to your prospect or client, you don't have value add...
Kaumil 08-09-2002, 03:39 PM Work from home. We are purchasing an office soon.
Mesum 08-09-2002, 04:13 PM Usually from home, but I do work in a web designing company's office too!
The best part about working at home is I could get sex anytime I want :D
I can eat or drink whatever I want, and most of all, work naked (I know you will puke if you try to imagine me naked!)
sadistikal 08-09-2002, 04:20 PM I work from work most of the time. But it depends on how I feel. I can pretty much work from home whenever I like just by sending an email letting my boss know where I'll be for the day.
I'm not in web hosting business though. I'm just a lowly SA.
Jeremy W. 08-09-2002, 04:50 PM I spend one day a week at home :)
alohahosts 08-09-2002, 06:12 PM Work from home. We have two separate offices attached to the house, with their own entrances.
achost_ca 08-09-2002, 11:30 PM Home, or from a clients office, depends on the project(s) I'm doing for them.
Aussie Bob 08-10-2002, 05:23 AM Have an office downtown but use my office at home mostly. Mainly for convenience. If I have any face to face meetings, then this happens at the office downtown. It's a good setup. Works great. :D

In the middle of total remodel of the place double car garage detached from the house is being turned into a regular office.
Right now my desk gets moved once a week for painting, new tiles etc.
What a pain:bawling:
