View Full Version : Directadmin or Cpanel?
Rageki-John 12-31-2007, 03:54 AM I'm thinking of going into the hosting company with a dedicated server but I'm not sure of which panel to get. Directadmin is pretty good in my eyes and it's only $10 a month for the license and Cpanel is $39 a month for the license. I'm on a pretty low budget and I'm not sure which one to get.
VAGU-Jeffrey 12-31-2007, 04:02 AM CPanel is much better in my own opinion but, some prefer DirectAdmin as it's faster.
You can find Cpanel much cheaper depending on what provider you go.
r2d3m 12-31-2007, 04:19 AM I would go for cPanel since I believe it is the most familiar to users. It is simple to use and better, in my opinion.
Server00 12-31-2007, 04:41 AM If you have enough money to buy cpanel, than do it :). If your budget is limited than by Directadmin. Ask your dedicatedserver provider how much it all costs.
blowouthosts 12-31-2007, 05:29 AM Yes, I use cPanel and I love it as it is user friendly and most of my clients have used it before. I think that you will be very pleased!
Mikie4648 12-31-2007, 06:00 AM YAWN, this has been bashed around so many times but i guess ill go for one more stretch;
Directadmin anyday. Cpanel for those who want to offer a host of features that 99% of user dont use. Cpanel for those who want to deal with bogged down servers, security issues, slow control panel loads, high loads and in general a perl driven system.
boonchuan 12-31-2007, 06:03 AM Cpanel is established, most widely used, comprehensive. Directadmin is neat, simple to use and is adding more and more features and is extremely stable.
ROI wise I would take Directadmin and also I like Directadmin for its simplicity and its support rocks, they normally solved your problems with pin point accuracy!
AH-Tina 12-31-2007, 12:19 PM Cpanel, because its what customers are familiar with and you can easily migrate someone in from another Cpanel server (web, db, email, etc.).
Talk to your dedicated server provider. Sometimes you can get a free Cpanel license thrown in.

CrazyTech 12-31-2007, 01:59 PM Both control panels are the two best in the Linux industry IMHO. I don't really look at security as a huge concern with either because I feel it comes down to the server admin running each more than anything. Both control panels have their known issues, but these can be fixed by a competent admin.
That being said, I recently came to a fork in the road where I had to choose either cPanel or DA. It was a hard choice. The key DA feature is the small memory footprint it has. The key for cPanel is the user side and the server administration features it has such as how easy it is to recompile PHP with a specific module.
In the end, I stuck with cPanel. I think it's a personal preference thing that you have to look at and weigh the pros and the cons about each.
Rageki-John 12-31-2007, 04:28 PM After much thinking I have come to the conclusion that I will go with Directadmin because not that many hosts offer it and Cpanel is too widely offered and I want to stand out as much as possible from all the other hosts. Thanks everyone.
PAH - Tim 12-31-2007, 11:41 PM I use cPanel. A lot of users are familiar with it, its nice and easy to administrate and has enough features to allow you to run your hosting company. Its also widely accepted by alot billing programs and other hosting related software.
Mikie4648 01-01-2008, 12:30 AM I use cPanel. A lot of users are familiar with it,
Only the clients who bounce around from host to host are familiar with it. Everyone else really couldnt care less as long as it works properly. And that includes clients who have never seen a control panel or hosted a site.
Hostenvy 01-01-2008, 02:39 AM Cpanel, Because It is very easy to use, Most things are just one click away =)
TradeViceroy 01-01-2008, 03:14 AM Morning:
I see that you picked DirectAdmin. Good choice! I agree with everything boonchuan pointed out in his post. While cPanel's front end is nice, IMHO it just offers too much. Most users only access a few features in a control panel. They want to perform tasks with as few as clicks as possible.
DirectAdmin is simple and easy to learn from a user's perspective. cPanel might be considered an "industry standard", but so is Windows in the OS field. :) There are plenty of people out there who prefer basic and simplicity to flashy and feature rich. With that being said, DA has everything a user would want or need to manage their site. You can actually reach their support and they will work with you to resolve any issues. The developer community is very friendly on their support forums as well. Plus, the price is hard to beat. :)
The next few sentences are really for people who find this thread later...
In the end it all comes down to what you feel comfortable supporting. Afterall you are the one who has to manage it. I suggest that you demo both panels and try to pick the one best designed for your potiental customer market. Good luck!
Mikie4648 01-01-2008, 03:18 AM Directadmin on all our servers. We would never go back to cPanel, not in a million years.
uberhostNET 01-01-2008, 11:56 AM Directadmin on all our servers. We would never go back to cPanel, not in a million years.
We have just one server left with cPanel, and it just seems to be a chore to use WHM compared to the organization and speed of DA.
After much thinking I have come to the conclusion that I will go with Directadmin because not that many hosts offer it and Cpanel is too widely offered and I want to stand out as much as possible from all the other hosts. Thanks everyone.
Awesome! Hope you enjoy DA, and I'll look forward to seeing you on the DirectAdmin Forums (http://www.directadmin.com/forum/index.php) if you have questions (my username is "rtaylor" there).
Happy New Year,
Rick
