Hello,

It's difficult to find web hosts who run on state-of-the-art FreeBSD OS.

I have searched on Google, DMOZ, Yahoo!, etc. I have asked in FreeBSD newsgroups, and received positive replies.

Now, I'd like to hear from the WebHostingTalk community. If you know of any Web Hosts running on FreeBSD (SHARED HOSTING), please reply!

So far I know of:

· pair.com
· addr.com
· thinkhost.com
· iserver.com

The more replies, the better!

And thanks in advance!

Ian

FreeBSD as a dedicated server solution, or shared hosting?

There's some good hosts I can suggest that offer FreeBSD dedicated server solutions. And, out of these, some plan to offer FreeBSD shared hosting soon.

Personally, I'd suggest to any web host of the superiority of FreeBSD over Linux, especially something like Linux RedHat (which is one of the worst Linux brands -- but unfortunately the most common and popular of Linux brands).

ADDR = bad. I wouldn't sign up with them in a blue fit.

Agreed 100%!

I had an account with them once, and I guess they sell their users' email address to spam lists. On a daily baisis I would receive approx 5 spam. Horrible!

Perhaps they make up the difference in their low price by selling their user's email addresses!

Now offset that low price difference, with their insecure servers. Add another point that all of their insecure servers have network mounted drives. Therefore, someone roots one of their servers, they have then rooted them all without any more effort.

Addr.com is one of the worst servers in that regard. I mean, slack security is one thing, but then mount all the drives on all the systems on the network giving any attacker equal ability to destroy or vandalize all the data from just one rooting? Just stupid. Don't even get me started on Addr.com!

The best FreeBSD host I know of Mac OS X. I use it now to host my site

http://bigt.dhs.org
http://macwrite.dhs.org
http://harrrisonmedia.dhs.org

The power of FreeBSD with the ease of use of the Mac

but seriously, I am using FreeBSD as my OS now, so why is it the best linux/unix? I don't understand.

FreeBSD isn't Linux or a version/brand of Linux. Linux and FreeBSD are both variants of Unix. They are built differently and offer different things. FreeBSD is inherently more stable and secure, as compared to most Linux distributions, especially compared to RedHat. There are different brands of Linux that vary as well, such as Slackware, SuSe, Caldera, Debian, etc. But FreeBSD isn't a Linux brand, so it's not the best of Linux, it's just better than Linux. Maybe I didn't fully understand your question/comment above?

Most people are more familiar with Linux and Linux is far more popular, which is why so many people use it. It also supports more programs (not that much more), but are usually program issues because the developer(s) in question were more used to Linux or not familiar with FreeBSD enough -- plus there's obviously a higher demand for Linux programs over FreeBSD, just as more people write Win32 programs for Win98 and the like, rather than NT, due to the platforms' demand and popularity with the majority of users (and the majority are not technically knowledgeable).

Anyway, I don't really see any important programs not supporting FreeBSD, so I suppose it depends on your opinion and what you'd need or want -- as well as how familiar you are. Many things are the same as Linux (command and configuration-wise), but there's enough differences too, to make people think twice, unless they have time to learn the differences.

For virtual hosting, you may like to try http://www.addy.com

I believe their servers run FreeBSD.

I have set a few people up on Virtualis. They use FreeBSD, they worked out fine.
