View Full Version : Where to start?
jeremyc 12-30-2007, 02:00 PM Hi,
I purchased a reseller account from Scala Hosting and really don't know where to start. I'm confused. I have a couple of web templates for my site, but they are not really that professional. When I do start to edit my hosting website, I do not know how to persuade customers to purchase from me.
Also, I am clueless on sign ups and billing. I thought about using WHMCS, but I need to be able to accept through PayPal, add invoices when clients purchase extra things such as software, but I'm not sure if you can do this with WHMCS.
Also, what about the legal side of hosting? I read that all I have to do is post a TERMS OF SERVICE, ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY, and a REFUND POLICY. Is this true?
Also, should I advertise?
Can someone give a little advice? I am not asking for a full tutorial or essay or anything, maybe a site to help or some hints.
Thanks!
everity 12-30-2007, 02:06 PM Check the tutorials section, there is a lot of good advice there.
HighLayer 12-30-2007, 02:08 PM With whmcs you can use paypal and the client can choose addons etc. whmcs does everything you can think of ;)
jeremyc 12-30-2007, 02:24 PM Ok, thanks! I wasn't really sure to purchase WHMCS, but I think I will. I'm new here so sorry for asking about something I can find in the tutorials section. Thanks.
coldgansta 12-30-2007, 03:46 PM Yes whmcs is the way to go,i pay $5 a month for it and ile never look back.
Dosent take to long to install and configure for your reseller account.
As for a REFUND POLICY i do this anyway for all my clients i give all new members 30 days money back with no questions asked.
I even setup sites for some clients.
Go for it dude what you got to loose?

TQ Mark 12-30-2007, 05:51 PM Sorry if this sounds rude, but why are you starting a web hosting service in the first place?
You admit you don't know what you are doing, so why would customers want to trust you and purchase service from you? Web hosting is a real business, not just an easy cash machine like some people think.

Good point.
I was actually thinking that these are questions you should have been asking before you jumped in.. perhaps?
HostThree 12-30-2007, 08:45 PM Like in most businesses, there isn't a book that tells you how to do things, you just kind of learn how to do it.
I think you might have jumped into the deep end a bit quickly, If I were you I would sit down with a pen and paper and see what you hope to achieve from this, where you are going to get your site and what market you are going to target.
Have a look around the forum, there are millions of businesses here all offering different services.
Best of Luck
Scott

Actually, I know a lot about Cpanel/WHM, and am trying to get some pointers and tips for where to start. I am looking at different ways of designing my start, and merely asked for some tips on where to start. Such as, should I use WHMCS or what is the best method to starting up, etc. I am not clueless on things like accounting, hosts, cpanel/whm, just clueless on where to start as with templates and other things. Sorry if this sounds rude also.

So, are you more familiar with the technical aspects of hosting and administering servers? If so, what is your specialty - what scripts or software do you have a lot of experience with? For example if you run a lot of Joomla websites you could cater towards Joomla websites and developers. You have to find out what your strong suit is and capitalize on it.

I do not know too much of Joomla, but as of software, I know a lot of things like vBulletin/phpBB, and some others. I can do lots with cpanel and whm, and I do not really have to worry too much about these things because my reseller account has 27/7 live support with professional technicians.
Edit: I do not have to worry with servers at the moment. I plan to move to dedicated in about a year or so, by that time, I will probably be an expert!
coldgansta 12-31-2007, 06:21 AM I agree with alot of points made here.
Reseller account are the way to go if your just starting and wanting to learn all about hosting.
If you buy a reseler account from a good host with fast suport,if any clients have an isue and they submit a ticket for suport to you and you dont know how to resolve it,then you submit a ticket to your host and they tell you how to resolve it.
I know that it takes a bit longer to get isue's resolved but it works.
And if you have a reseller account and the isue is server-side you cant fix it so you have to submit a ticket anyways.
I have reseller accounts and whmcs.
I started with blogs as wordpress is easy to work with and i can easly fix any clients site usues.
Curently i have 35 clients paying from around $2.00-$5.00 for there accounts,They are all happy as ime with a great host thats %100 uptime and never any server isues.
Hope this helps
jeremyc 12-31-2007, 09:37 PM Yes, just a tip, with the web host I use (Scala Hosting), they offer Live Chat for their users, and an HTML code to put the same Live Chat box on say my site, so my clients can chat live directly with their support team. Works great! And, they don't put their name on the chat box, or anything linking back to them. My clients think it's my support team, instead of Scala Hosting. But I was considering telling them that I am not providing the live chat (Once I get my site up)!

No. I suggest speaking to a lawyer and an accountant before jumping into this.
