After a LOT of shopping around, and reading these excellent forums for track records and recommendations / user experiences, I finally took the plunge to move my site to a dedicated server. This was not done by choice, but because my previous hosting company decided I was using up too many system resources to stay on a shared server.
Because my website has been run largely as a hobby and not a business, I was not prepared for this move. For a start - HOW MUCH?!! I've been paying $25 per month for hosting, thinking THAT was a lot ;)
So, I contacted a hosting company called Adjeu (www.atjeu.com) and explained my situation, and literally within minutes I got a reply. The level of service I have received from them so far has been outstanding - especially as my choice of host was partly based on their price (this is all coming out of my beer money!).
Now this might sound like easy stuff to all you experts out there, but they have gone to great lengths to help me move my site across from the old virtual server. They have even set up my server the same as it was before, so I dont get confused! They transferred all my content over for me, and have offered support at every step of the way.
There are three main programs I use on my site - a forum, a news program, and an e-store (which we are opening to help cover server costs!). I had never used SSH, telnet, or anything like that before, and they have given me all the information and commands I needed to make the move as smooth as possible. They have even fixed several problems I created in setting up the SQL databases, and upgraded the server extensions to suit my software.
Probably the most remarkable thing is that at any time of the day or night when I have emailed them, they have replied within minutes, and have always pointed me in the right direction, or actually sorted the problem out for me. It is clear that they take pride in their service, and I have to admit that without them my site wouldnt have survived the move with me at the healm!
With such glowing praise, I should point out that I do not work for them, and have no vested interest in the company. I live in the UK, where bandwidth is a lot more expensive than the US. However, I have found these forums extremely helpful in finding the right server for me based on feedback from users, and I felt it appropriate to put my experience up here.
To anyone having problems with their current server, or anyone looking for a new dedicated server, especially if it's the first time you've used one, I couldnt recommend Atjeu highly enough. Hats off to them - they have saved my website!
Now if only Network Solutions were half as good, I could hit the switch and make the move live!
