bigjohn 08-08-2002, 10:52 PM Howdy Folks!
Just found this place today, and I must say WOW!!!! What great info there is here. I haven't been this caught up in reading forums in awhile. Good Job guys, whoever runs this site. :)
At anyrate...I am currently in the military, and when not out on TDY or doing a field march, I play a game called, Everquest. <Anyone ever heard of it?>
I have a 54 Shaman on it, and have subsequently started a small guild on the server I play on. I need to purchase a domain name <yes, it;s available> and host it somewhere. Have a couple of bro's who are looking at getting sites for themselves as well, and they want me to find a good place to go. I have narrowed down a few choices, and wanted to run them by you guys here to see what you thought. Just looking for some feedback.
Hope that is ok?
SO here it goes:
1.) Data Centurion - Haven't been able to find out much on these folks, but there prices were pretty good.
2.) ValueWeb - Thought these guys were pretty good.
3.) ***** - My cousin hosts with them, and he is ify on them, but, I know if I go here, he will help me out.
4.) Advanced Internet Technologies = These guys were pretty kewl, they are all ex-military too! I like that :)
5.) Ready Hosting - There prcing looked to be about the best.
Thats what I got. They all appear to be pretty big companies, and not small mom and pop shops. I don't wanna be on some guys server in house, but rather in a facility or center somewhere....
Look forward to your guys;s thoughts....
Thanks again!
Cheers
:)

Upon reading some other posts, I know what the * thing means...Guess I will stay away from them...maybe I should tell my cousin...lol....
Thanks again

sdollen 08-08-2002, 10:58 PM I've actually been here awhile and still don't know what the *** are blanking out. I mean, I figure it's some company, just don't know who...... enlighten me??????
Hiccups 08-08-2002, 11:28 PM Do a search here for any host you are thinking about using. (Seach button up at the top of the page) Most of the time you will find quite a bit of information/feedback just doing that.
**** names are names that have been censored for some reason, I think most often due to spamming but also for other reasons. Not a good sign.
AIT may be a bunch of ex-military guys but... well, do a search...
It is usually best to get your domain name at a different place than you get your hosting. Could save you some grief later on.

YES. Get the name at an actual registrar.

Barbara 08-09-2002, 10:16 AM Don't use ReadyHosting. They're the worst pay host I've ever used.
DotComster 08-09-2002, 10:25 AM Despite the ban on them - go with (3) Whoever they are - you can change after your cousin teaches you the ropes, and you find better.
Hello,
As Jenna mentioned, better get your domain registered with a domain registrar, else than your hosting provider. It's much better if the domain registrar has been accredited by ICANN.
Sometimes your hosting provider may not give your domain name or give you a hard time, if you want to leave their host. Since they've got total control over your domain, if they are domain resellers.
Respects,
A. Golestan
jared3404 08-09-2002, 12:29 PM No, I disagree. If you cousin is not happy with #3 then you won't be either. Do some research and you'll find whats best for you.

bigjohn 08-14-2002, 02:18 PM Ok...well..>I had made up my mind, and was getting ready to go with ValueWeb, but then received this email from OPENHSP (anyone ever heard of them?)
They promise the world for $4.95...and they seemed legitimate (which was too good to be true, I know that now) Man...how wrong could I have been. These guys are horrible. I have this great default web page up (their's), but can't ftp to it, can't add emails...can't do anything...looks like I am going to give ValueWeb a call - this sux.
I have had an account now for 6 days, and although it's up, they have taken away my control panel, no one is answering the phone, and upon further review, it appears they are connected with a company called matrixcubed (anyone heard of them?) which is connected to the Evil Mother Empire Cedura Networks (anyone heard of them?) According to the BBB, matrixcubed was sued back in 2000 for fraudulent practices...figures this happens to me...
Anyone got any suggestions??? Am I going to run into the same sorta thing with ValueWeb? They seem some what more reliable...there price is higher than HSP...but then...pretty much everyone on the internet is higher than those guys...but again..they suck...so it doesn't matter.
Am I the only lame brain who chose these guys?
CirKit 08-14-2002, 03:12 PM John - did you say you "received email from" them? Meaning they sent you unsolicited junk email (also known as spam) and you bought something from them? Shame on you.
Rule #1. Spammers are liars.
Rule #2. Don't buy ANYTHING from anyone who sends you spam.
bigjohn 08-15-2002, 12:06 AM
Ya...that;s me...I am a morron...Hey...thought they looked pretty legit...oh well...went with ValueWeb, and everything seems to be pretty decent right now...
Just got my site info, and am trying upload my data atm...think I have found a home...
:D
Cheers Chaps!!!

dayton 08-16-2002, 12:32 PM I liked the fact that AIT were former military guys too, but for anyone here considering them, check out http://www.aitsucks.net, first!
The posts above warning you to register your domain name with a different registrar are true. I made the mistake of registering my domain name (daytoninternet.com) with the same company that I WAS hosting with and they stole my domain name from me! It can happen to you, too, especially if you register your domain name with AITDOMAINS.COM.

bitserve 08-16-2002, 09:43 PM I missed the military reference before. I just have one thing to say:
Hooah!
Sorry to hear you went with hate host, though.
bigjohn 08-21-2002, 09:48 PM Hmmm...
Thanks for the info Dayton...I looked at the testimonials...and was at least encouraged to find that most of the complaints were older ones - not many came from this year - cept yours and some other guys came from this year...but hey....they aren't my hosting company, so I am not going to defend them...
I made my choice (lol...second choice really) and I am using ValueWebs services for now.
Although, I will say this, I did register a couple of domains through AIT and they sold them to me for $7.99 - just for the hell of it...they said my normal price would have been $9.99. Guy I talked to said they were running a special, and if I wanted the domains, to go ahead and do it now...so I did. Since I am not hosted with AIT, I imagine my domains are secure...lol...they work anyways...
:D
Cheers Chaps!

dayton 08-21-2002, 11:21 PM Big John.
Although a lot of the threads were started last year, follow them all through to the final post. You will notice that a lot of people are still having problems with AIT. They have not improved over the last couple of years, they have gone steadily downhill in regards to customer service, billing, and credibility. Just take a look at their current Better Business Bureau rating (unsatisfactory.)
Good luck with AITDOMAINS. I liked the price too, but I won't put up with all the **** you have to put up with for the good prices. Godaddy.com offers great prices too (without all the ****!)
combs 08-22-2002, 12:29 AM I think you chose the worst group of web hosts :) valueweb is ok though, i've used them before
bigjohn 08-26-2002, 10:02 PM Ya...
I have heard of GoDaddy...but no one there seemed to reply to my inquiries...AITDOMAINS did get back with me...thought that was pretty kewl...
Cheers!!!
BigJohn.
dayton 08-28-2002, 12:30 AM Never had a problem with GoDaddy.com. Always respond to me.
