I just upgraded to Comcast Professional broadband service. 3.5MPS download cap and 384kbs upload cap. Actual speeds are about 500kbs-1mps download, 60-140kbs upload.

At Comdex last year here in Sydney I pulled up a chair at a computer and downloaded a file from the Internet to test the speed.

My eyes nearly dropped out of my head when I seen 8.5mbyte/s :D

The fastest downloads I get on a regular basis are at the University. Their downloads normally sit about 2-3mbyte/s.

I downloaded files at a particular bank here in Sydney at 900kb/s.

To contrast, the slowest corporate connection I've used was surprisingly at the Australian headquarters of one of the world's largest computer companies... downloads were a whole 3kb/s.

At home I get a slow but steady 5kb/s. At one of my friend's place with cable he gets about 400-500kb/s from Australian sites and about 100kb/s from overseas (except Asia where it's 400-500kb/s as well).... although when the cable company changed hands this slowed down somewhat.

Maybe the file was being served on a computer in the other room :D

Nope, it was coming from a server in Brisbane that I frequently use.
