View Full Version : "ID Protect" - Who does it free?
mpcidm 12-17-2007, 07:30 PM I purchased a hosting package from CrucialWebHost about a month ago (see my review here). I decided to register a domain with them, as well. I believe it was about $6.95 for the .com, and $9 for "ID Protect", which protects my private information from being registered to the database.
I'll be adding another domain soon. My question is, what's "the best" domain registrar that does this for free (and not for just one year, but always), accepts Paypal, and has a good price?
Thanks. :)
hekwu 12-17-2007, 07:35 PM http://www.1and1.com comes to mind... I would not host with 1&1 but for domains, you can't really go wrong... I have a bunch there, no issues. Hits on the things you want: paypal and cheap price. Plus, they are fairly large and won't be out of business next week...
mpcidm 12-17-2007, 08:03 PM I had a feeling 1&1 might be suggested. :) I had hosting with them a while back, and they included a domain, which gave private registration for free.
Just want to verify: is 1&1's Private Domain Registration free _always_, or just for the initial year? Also, is it normal for companies to charge for forwarding your mail? I would assume so, but I'd like to be sure.
01globalnet 12-17-2007, 09:24 PM Stargate (now US2.net) does it free.
You could search for their resellers to get lower prices.
v12kid 12-17-2007, 11:48 PM www.namecheap.com gives free whois protection as well :)
maxbear 12-18-2007, 11:53 AM answerable.com is free. namecheap, I think it's for the first year, after that, it's expensive.
AeonCube 12-18-2007, 12:17 PM I think eNom do that for free... or at least it will be very very cheap but sure its free. :)

They told me it was always free...
Yes, it is normal for a company to charge for forwarding your (physical US postal Service) mail. I've never thought about how much 1and1 charges for that.... I have a couple of domains on private... The rest (I have over 100 domains) go to my PO Box. I only used the private reg since it was there and I wanted to test if there were any extra steps or other issues with it....
The best way IMO is to setup a PO Box... but that is me...
Aorozco 12-21-2007, 12:29 AM domaincentral.com Is very good and free privacy.
kohashi 12-21-2007, 02:38 PM From my personal list of any sort of whois protection for free:
AIT Domains
Domain Discover
Gandi
1&1
Tucows
Name.com
mind you, the degree may vary, i included stuff like whois email protection.
wonderpoint 12-21-2007, 02:46 PM http://www.resellerclub.com/ offers free whois ID protection and accept paypal payments for domain registrations.
pilihosting 12-22-2007, 10:52 PM resellerclub only offers to resellers, it's ok if you registrar in a large number of domains
ramdak5000 12-22-2007, 11:31 PM resellerclub only offers to resellers, it's ok if you registrar in a large number of domains
Are you sure? I am both a reseller and an individual customer. When I purchase a domain as the latter, I have always seen the free id protect option although I have never used it.

resellerclub offers it to its resellers for free who in turn offer it to their customers for free... as their reseller you would get it for free to offer rather than use for yourself... as their resellers' customer though you would get it free...
You need to define your criteria for "the best". "The cheapest" is Name.com at $5.99 with free privacy. No problems with them so far. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind paying $6.95 for registration and $9 for privacy. I have the greatest of respect for Crucial, but you know, you shouldn't have your webhosting and domain registration with the same company.
nickn 12-24-2007, 11:53 PM answerable.com is free. namecheap, I think it's for the first year, after that, it's expensive.
To clarify, it is free the first year - and after that it's $2.88/year on top of the $9.29/year domain registration.
You can most often find coupons to cover a chunk of these charges though. :D
Afaik, there are no coupons for renewals at NameCheap. You should know that.

Oh but there is..just depends if you catch the right time of the year (such as right now..)
You only need one renewal coupon a year to renew all your domains using it. :D
So what is the current NameCheap renewal coupon and what is the discount?

SANTAS4REAL $8.41
Mike's Red Thing 12-29-2007, 11:48 AM I personally know of free whois protect at
1&1 (http://1and1.com/) and
Triple.com (http://www.triple.com/) which I'm using at the moment. I mean domain registration, not ID protect
SANTAS4REAL $8.41
I just tried that. It didn't work :(
