View Full Version : Lindows - Never seen anything so useless!

Ok I installed Lindows 1.11 on a machine I have. On same machine (other HDD I have a RedHat 7.2).

I installed it and after examining it for 10 minutes, 1 hour then 1 day I always resoluted in one expression: WTF

That, so called, Wonder Product is nothing more then a poor Debian Linux with a totally common Desktop for Linux: KDE
All they did is add a few things in the menu so you can download software and pay yourself to death and they extended the WINE (Windows Emulator) to an extend where you can run f.e. Office 2000 (not XP) and (I heard) some other programs too but nothing else but Office 2000 worked.

My soundcard was not detected, sll the stuff you get with RedHat for free is not there (sure so you buy it from them) and you cannot even open a Shell - need to install uudecode first DOH!

All in all a VERY POOR Linux which is for the bin and a Windows Emulator which is a joke. Even IBM did a better job with the Win0S/2 module back in 1992.

:puke: Lindows

I've heard that the install is easy...

Course, Corel's was easy to, when I went to their product demo, years back they did a live install.

maybe, but then again RedHat's an easy install too - just pop in the disk and let it go, no harder than Windows really.

I've read a bit on Lindows but can't really anything good about it. It's supposed advantages seem a little poor next to all it's disadvantages compared to RedHat 7.3/KDE 3.0 for example.

hehe I have Corel Linux. Yup, it's true it definitely sucks. It couldn't find drivers for my sound card, or my modem so I was pretty much screwed. Although that text editor was nice :D

I'll never even both with Lindows.

They charge $100 to download a copy... I'll just stick with linux; it hasn't done me wrong yet.

I hate how people are bastardizing Linux to be more like Windows to appeal to users who expect Linux to do everything that Windows does. If they want Windows, they should use Windows! I don't understand why people are trying to turn Linux into Windows. Nothing is going to run Windows programs better than Windows.

They charge 100 bucks until the final product is out. They charge 100 so you can download now, test everything, get all the goodies, support, etc. and help out a good cause. That's why they charge you now. But rest assured it will be free upon the final release.

Err... This is from the Lindows FAQ on their website under the title "How much will LindowsOS cost?":

For $99 users will obtain LindowsOS along with the promise that Lindows.com will work hard to give consumers real value. Your satisfaction is assured since all Lindows.com products come with a money-back, satisfaction guarantee. Creating a compatible, stable, easy-to-use OS isn't an easy job, and Lindows.com is committed to remain in this market for many years to come. This $99 fee is expected per major release of LindowsOS and will help Lindows.com to provide quality support and future updates to LindowsOS.

Looks like it won't be free after all :)

I don't see any "good cause" then to fill someones pockets with money who just mixed a Debian Linux with KDE and an extended Wine, selling other products with it already before the initial product is even finished.

Also, as said by dancies, it is not free. 100$ is even MORE then I payed once for Windows98 for example. And under Win98 I got at least all my hardware detected and I could install more then just Office 2000.

once WINEX matures some more and supports more functions i may ditch windows... WINEX plays most of my game already - Diablo II, AOE etc. Its pretty amazing really... haven't tried office with it because i got openoffice.org...

haven't checked out WINE in a while now. Any news regarding it's ability to run Adobe and Macromedia?

(offtopic I suppose)

Well that's even "worse" then. What the use of Lindows then???

Well, even if Lindows runs directx, there is still good Arabic support to add until I consider them instead of Windows. :o
