How did y'all go about it? :)

Tertius,

Well, it's quite the interesting story. When we had originally (myself & far too many partners) began developing a name we .. came up with one that already existed.

Oops. We thought it was the oddest coincidence and at the time, Fused Network, the company with it seemed to be doing quite well so we left them alone after some initial contact trying to purchase it.

A few weeks later we came across their site saying they had went out of business: Bingo! (I swear, we had nothing to do with their exit from the industry!)

The name itself originated from all of us 'fusing', we were from different aspects of the industry. We had one professional (CCNA) for networking, security another offering ninja-code and myself who was involved in the industry as a client representative. We came up with the 'Bringing IT Together' motto and moved forward. Before launch, all of the partners exited and left me. *sobs to himself quietly*

Here I am. :)
So, all-in-all it was quite the random naming experience. We wanted a great name and could only come up with ones that were already taken.

I knew what type of service I wanted to offer so it as just a matter of deciding on the perfect name for it. I used to run a website called Spunky Online so basically it just evolved into where it is today. :)

Not as good of a story as David's but still counts for something. :)

My wife came up with our company's name. I am very proud of it. About 2 months after we started the company I talked to many people stating they already heard of us (which I doubted at the time), which I beleive the name just sounded familiar and was very acceptable.

I spent a few hours working with different possibilities and permutations until I settled on The Hosting Team. Normally, I tell people to come up with more original names, but in this case wanted to stay within a host/hosting paradim.

Mine was quite random, i used to have a web design company, but then decided not to let the domain go to waste so i turned it to web hosting :P

A lot of them are quite random.

I.E. One person thinks up some random word, and the other person does the same, and then the two words are combined. Names like "StartLogic" and "Lunarpages" seem to have been created this way, but I have nothing to back this.

It was a good job to name a web hosting company. I suggest a name " Hard Brain" to a web hosting company.

Pretty much the domain came first... then I chose the name around it.

Company was originally called Innovative Hosting. That was quite a bit to type into the browser, so I shortened it to "InnoHosting" :)

Well we were playing with brandable names and actually our first choice was taken and we were talking about uptime and things and we came up with our name Fly High Hosting and now its just Fly High

I like it and most people tend to remember it .

Everybody has a little geek inside them, so it was just natural...

We came up with ours after seeing Dediwebhost. I thought what else could you stick on the end of Dediweb, I thought of webspace and the name then came naturally "Dediwebspace". I contacted Dediwebhost to make sure it wasnt a problem and they said not a problem. And since then Dediwebspace was our name.

A simple test I use when thinking up domain names is the so called "radio test". If a prospective client were to hear the domain name over the radio. Will he be able to remember it and be able to spell it. If I can answer yes to both I am on the right track.

Try taking a leaf out of the successful products in the market:
a) redhat
b) suse
c) apple
d) mac
e) ipod
f) windows
g) plesk
h) cpanel
and the list goes on...

what do they say?
The name should be short, easy to pronounce and quick to stick to your head...

I know people like greek, latin names because they sound cool, but on an average your target crowd should be able to pronounce the word and type the right name in their browser, else you lose the business!

Mum thought of Pastilles Networks.

Regarding the new host I am setting up now. Well lets say... it's a bit random but definitely brandable! :)

I used my first initial, my wife's first initial, and then our last initial and then threw hosting on the end.

MDDHosting

It's not quite as catchy as some I've heard - but to me it means something.
