How can you tell an approximate # of domains hosted by a specific nameserver?

Thanks in advance.

If you're asking about how many are hosted on a server you don't have access to, you can't really know. If you are asking about a server you do have access to, depending on the type of named service you are running, you can check one file, or check one directory by typing in one simple command to count the zone entries or the zone records.

Verisign has files that store that information. There have been threads here about this before. Run a search and you should find it. You'll find the verisign link in one or two of the threads that lead you to the signup form you need to fill out to get access.

I just ran through today's org file for our ns1.focalhosting.com and found all of the .org domains we host. You can do the same for .net and .org (and .edu and .gov if you're so inclined). You can look up anyone's .com/.net/.org/.gov/.edu domains. ;)

There used to be a host that had this information online in a database too. I forgot who it was. You'll probably find that link by searching for those threads, as well.

What about all the other domain extensions? I've never used this feature at NetworkSolutions, and I think that's just for the domains in their own database, or is it pulled from Internic?

Thanks for the feedback. I had seen sites before that listed the number of domains registered to various nameservers. Just wondering how this is done, or if anyone knows of a site that still does this. I'll look into the Verisign thing as well.

Thanks Big for the link!

I'm still scouring the web for a site/program/method to input a nameserver and get a return on the approx. # of sites (even if it's just .com, .net, and .org) attached to that nameserver.
