I'm planning to go for a basic plan which offers 50MB web space and 1GB bandwith. This seems good enough for my first site.

However if i do need to upgrade to a better package for shared hosting in the future, will it be problematic? For example do i need to re-upload my files again or reconfigure my settings all over again?

it all depends on your host. this is a question you should ask them directly.

Everyone has different policies, but its pretty common to be able to upgrade your plan.

I think you would not need to as long as you stay with the same host. They can simply upgrade your space, bandwidth and permissions when you upgrade.
