View Full Version : [RESOLVED] Website rip found -- before it was even started!
Lpal-Jay 12-01-2007, 04:14 PM I thought this was a little funny. I managed to catch a website rip even before it was actually started.
ukhostingforyou.co.uk /dev/ layout.php
http://www.kcomhost.com (our site)
Not very smart copying the whole of our code. As it had the live chat code still there, I was able to track it down since showed on the chat program under pages that the person had visited.
I have bookmarked their site and will keep an eye on it. Just wondering what do you do if someone rips your site? This is the first time it's properly happened to me.
EDIT:
Even funnier, I've found that this guy is a client of ours at LicensePal.
alex-developer 12-01-2007, 05:42 PM contact him and ask to remove your design from his website.
the_pm 12-01-2007, 05:46 PM First, contact him directly, and document the contact (keep a record of times and dates of contact - that should do). Wait 1-2 days. Then send a DMCA notification to his upstream provider asking them to suspend his account and permanently remove the offending materials from the site.
I've probably sent 7-8 DMCA notifications in the past year for people ripping our site or our clients. So far, we have a 100% success tear-down rate :)
sTag-Dan 12-01-2007, 05:46 PM It happens all the time. I actually caught one today that ripped our old website's content (the plans/packages). One of the many reasons I took it down but we needed a change anyway :)
Way to go comfyhost ;) And thanks!
Fizzadar 12-01-2007, 07:09 PM Nice catch, what an idiot. Send a polite email. Follow (if no response) with a less polite email...
OR, ignore it and let him sit on his guilt (doesn't always work, but I've seen it work before)
HostThree 12-01-2007, 07:53 PM How is that a Rip? The guy has obviously taken the layout idea but none of the parts are like each other.
rh4uhosting 12-01-2007, 08:07 PM i find it funny when they copy the live chat code & stuff like the google urchin code.

It's obviously been changed a bit now as it was being worked on at the time of my post. But when I first saw it, everything was the same as I had coded/designed it.
I think you would have to be blind to not see the rip. The coding is pretty much all mine and the layout is exactly the same. The layout is a very important part of a design! Images are nothing, as shown here, they can be easily replicated.
Maybe you're one of the people who think that simply taking a layout and changing the images are fine. I seriously hope not.

They're only asking to get caught. I have sent the first message to him and will make my next move in a few days time if nothing happens.
Titan85 12-01-2007, 11:48 PM The template itself is not a rip. Their template is based off of your design, but it was designed by someone else (not anywhere near as good). If they copied your code, then go after them for that, but I don't think you have a good bases to go after the design. A rip is if they take your images and code to make another site. That has not been done here.

Titan, while I understand people will have different views about this. Changing the images is not enough to consider it not a rip. It was NOT designed by someone else, the layout was the exact same with my images still linked then they just uploaded their own.
I'm sure you wouldn't be happy if someone took your site then just changed the images so it was for their own.

I'm sure you wouldn't be happy if someone took your site then just changed the images so it was for their own.I looked through the HTML as well and the code is not the same. The CSS is very similar and they did probably copy that and change it for their own needs. But other than the CSS, I don't really see any direct copying.
I know how it is to have someone take your design and use it for themselves, but when I went after people for it, it was because it was a direct rip with images and exact code (even my html comment with the copyright).
I am just saying that I don't know how far you will get trying to report them for ripping.
azizny 12-02-2007, 11:04 AM It seems that the problem was solved out.
Peace,

Are you kidding me? All the classes are the same as I have used. The navigation is the only difference and that is because he doesn't have rollovers.
It's now been moved to their main site - ukhostingforyou.co.uk/
Lpal-Jay 12-02-2007, 01:40 PM They've agreed to take it down. This thread can now be closed.
