View Full Version : Domain registrars - URL forwarding question
Seabean 11-30-2007, 01:18 AM I'm trying to choose a domain registrar after having been away from all this for a few years. It's mainly down to Namecheap, Yahoo, or maybe GoDaddy.
If I register some domains without building a complete site, I still get some kind of landing/placeholder page per domain, right?
Now consider I build a site on the .com, but also register the .net and .org for safe keeping.. and I want these 2 placeholder pages to redirect to the .com page.
How does that work? Do I put a javascript window.location redirect command in the HTML, or how is the Domain forwarded or redirected?
(I'm reading the Wikipedia page on this right now, but any extra advice would be appreciated!)
I use mydomain.net as my primary registrar and they have URL forwarding setup if I use their nameservers. I just point the domain abc.net to abc.com in the URL forwarding area. It's that simple. :-D
Send me a PM if you have more questions.
Mike
managepartner_com 11-30-2007, 05:28 AM Normally Registrar have Domain Forwarding services, So no issues , u just have to request them to activate domain forwarding. Then u can direct your .net and .org domain to your .com domain.
Seabean 11-30-2007, 09:40 AM Thanks! Concerning the 3 that I mentioned (NC, Yahoo, GD) is the domain forwarding free with all of them?
And is it done through some kind of control panel ?
Eitherway, do the single placeholder pages they give.. can you still edit the HTML/js to redirect? (or at least put a redirect link to click on)?
(those 3 do give a placeholder page for "parked" domains, right?)
Seabean 12-02-2007, 03:12 PM OK, I went with Namecheap (not that the others aren't good, but I was impressed that some of their people post in this forum). I had to edit the names in this post to "wxw" to not be interpreted as VB code.
I started out with just one, my name, like "wxw.bobwhatever.com" and I want whoever types it, to be redirected to my current ISP's homepage which is a "/~home" like "wxw.myisp.com/~bobwhatever"
I guess I would just go (in my Namecheap acct) under URL Forwarding, and do this:
Host Name . . . . Forward URL . . . . . . . . . . . Redirect Type
www . . . . . . . wxw.myisp.com/~bobwhatever . . CNAME
@ . . . . . . . . wxw.bobwhatever.com . . . . . . URL Redirect
Is that the best way to go?
(and it doesn't void the free WhoisGuard I got?)
OK, I went with Namecheap
Good choice.

That won't quite work. Send an email to support@namecheap.com, our guys will guide you through it. Take advantage of the support team!
As far as the whoisguard goes, it won't be voided by this. It's always available and free the first year :)
Seabean 12-04-2007, 08:12 AM Thanks Nick.. much appreciated! I emailed support, and got it to work just fine. In a nutshell, for anyone else who might be reading this in the future..
Log into your NC Acct
Goto Manage Domains (left on blue bar across top)
Check the box for the domain you want to redirect
(then hit the "Edit Selected" button)
On the left panel under Host Management, click URL Forwarding
Copy the destination URL into both text boxes
(IE: wxw.myisp.com/~bobwhatever)
Select URL Redirect in both the dropdowns
(or both URL Frame if you want to mask)
Works fine... Thanks!
