View Full Version : Secondary nameserver elsewhere?

I am pretty new to DNS, but currently I have two nameservers on my own domain that I am using to host a VPS. They point to the IPs that came with my VPS account.

They're working fine, but to avoid the 'single point of failure' scenario, I would like to add additional nameservers elsewhere. However, I would like them to be my own domains, not that of the DNS provider.

Essentially, I want only the IPs from the provider and create the nameservers in my domain's name. It seems not too many providers allow this. I have already checked with EasyDNS and they said no.

Could someone suggest a reliable provider that allows this?

Thanks.

DNS Made Easy provides these 'vanity nameservers'. I use them and highly recommend their services. Anycasted network. 100% uptime SLA. Good stuff.

Thanks very much! Looks good, although I have asked them to clarify about the absence of dedicated IPs for the vanity nameservers.

If you are using cPanel you can always get another lowend VPS at some different DC and use it as DNSonly (http://www.cpanel.net/products/dnsonly/index.htm).

ANY DNS provider will offer this.
Just take their IPs and map your name servers to their IPs.
Boom... You are done... No one can stop you.

UltraDNS has an excellent network. If you can get a hold of an old (and free) secondary.com account you can even use their secondary DNS for free (this is what I do).
Netriplex also has an excellent anycasted network.
