Hello forum,

I posted in the VPS forum, but then realized this might be a better place for a question like this...

I'm picking up a client who is a video production company and hosts a lot of their work for their clients on the web. They have two sites right now for two different branches of what they do, but they are beginning to scale up a bit and want to switch from a local ISP hosting package to something more commercial. I like the idea of a VPS or reseller account, but their current budget is rather low. Because of that, I am a bit attracted to hosting packages from site5 and dreamhost (both of which I've heard good and bad things about).

Ideally, I would be looking for an account along the lines of:

50-75GB disk space
600GB-1TB High quality bandwidth
Linux OS
Shell Access required!
cPanel or Plesk Control panel

It'd be nice to keep their budget around $50/mo. They have two websites currently for their production needs. What would be the advantages of a VPS/reseller over multiple hosting accounts at Site5 ($7.50/mo) or Dreamhost ($6/mo)?

Thanks for your suggestions,
Seth

Their offers are theoretically. You cannot use the disk space/bandwith that offered in practice. Also if your web sites use many CPU or RAM on shared server when your hosting provider will suspend your account. Then you must look for a dedicated server. But your web sites don't use many system resource when I recommend Hostdime.

Also if your web sites use many CPU or RAM on shared server when your hosting provider will suspend your account. They will be publishing their videos, which may not place much of a strain on the server, depending on their approach.

However, hosts may be having other limitations in place, such various clauses regarding what can be hosted on their shared hosting and what can't. Hosting large amounts of videos, images etc. is sometimes forbidden. Check the hosts' terms of service, acceptable usage policies, FAQs and wiki, even contact the host.

A VPS usually comes with no or few such restrictions. I also comes with more control (and more responsibility) over the hosting environment.

Thanks for the posts, yeah I don't think RAM will be too much of a problem because it will mostly be static (or small PHP) pages just listing video clips for clients.

I've looked at hostdime and also recently saw Crucial Web Hosting. Crucial has a pretty good plan and allows (jailed) shell access. What are the advantages of getting a reseller package on, say, hostdime rather than doing two separate shared hosting accounts on Crucial or Dreamhost?

Thanks again,
Seth

Seth,

The biggest benefit clients see is the ability to have control of adding more accounts on demand. Normally hosts will give you access to a reseller panel which allows you to create, delete, or suspend accounts at your leisure without having to worry about accountability side of things.

If that's the case, go with DreamHost for a shared hosting account and push as much traffic as you can.
