I think ive finally decided thanks to Marc's money back guarentee and his promise that i'll be going into the new data center that im going to move my **** to MC Host.

One of the main things i think is going to get me confuzed is doing the transfer of my existing clients. (only about 40 of them)

They are all running on ns1.flamesburn.com and ns2.flamesburn.com

What do you guys think is the best bet to do this? I want to move a few test sites over before i move all of them over in order to make sure everything works fine.

I was thinkking of doing this:

using a second domain name which we will call 1234.com

if i use 1234.com as my master account domain to begin with, it will create ns1.1234.com and ns2.1234.com so i can test a few of my own domains on the new server by changing their name servers. Once im comfortable i can change 1234.com over to flamesburn.com according to mark for free.


the other thing i was wodnering is, if i move flamesburn.com over to the new host (update its dns to point to mc host), yet leave the nameserver ips for ns1.flamesburn.com and ns2.flamesburn.com pointing at my current hosts nameservers. Will it still dirrect my current clients to my old hots servers?


man...i wish i would have picked a better host in the first place so i didnt have to go through all this.

Also, im going to move all my clients files for them myself. One of the main things i was wondering is, are their any programs that will do one of the following. A: allow me to keep permission settings during transfer. I do not want to have to re-set all permissions for all the cgi scripts on my clients servers and B: allow to me change paths. The absolute paths will be changed during the move and would likea program that can in any way look @ the code and update the paths. Ive seen soemone talk about soemthing liek this somewhere.

......that may be confuzing....if anyone has any ideas that are better then mine....please help.

You could transfer flamesburn.com to our servers without moving your clients immediately or risking their websites going down. Just register the nameservers we assign you as dns1 and dns2, then change your main site to these nameservers and you're moved over with that one site. Then, simply change the sites you wish to move from ns1 and ns2 to dns1 and dns2 :)

If you don't want any issues with downtime then update the dns to show both dnsX & nsX's. Update the nsX dns settings to point to the new IP's after you have moved all the content then a couple of days later, remove or shut down your accounts and everything should be good to go. This is how we do it, and haven't had any problems.

can anyone suggest a program to take care of updating the system paths and stuff though? and possibly taking care of the permissions?

flamesburn: Another option for you could be to simply tell your clients that you have a newer and more powerful server to serve them from. Setup your main domain and WHM account and setup new nameservers.

Create your accounts for your clients [after your domain has propagated and all is running fine] and send them the email for them to upload their site to the new and "more powerful server". They'll have to edit their DNS info to your new nameservers and setup things like email etc.

It's the long way around but I feel it might be the safest way for you to take. :) You don't want propagation issues playing around with your client's sites. That's a great way to turn 40 clients into 4 clients. :eek:
