View Full Version : Have you overworked yourself to the point you feel like fainting?
Roy@ENHOST 08-05-2002, 01:08 PM Hi guys,
I had only 3 hours of sleep last night and was working NON STOP from morning to night and now I feel as though I feel like fainting.
I am wondering if anyone of you has any of those 'Hell Days'
If yes please share.
cbaker17 08-05-2002, 01:26 PM welcome to the world of webhosting....
I've worked myself to the point of fainting.. but, that was manual labor.
akashik 08-05-2002, 02:07 PM I once woke up and realized I was face down on my keyboard. As far as I could tell I'd managed about 30 minutes 'naptime'. I'd been awake for close to three days then. :)
Doesn't happen often. At the end of the day you do need to take your health into consideration. No point 'being there for everyone' if one day you go and have a stroke, and end up there for no-one.

Acroplex 08-05-2002, 04:57 PM I never sleep. That's why I now have 1000 posts :D

LOL , its funny becuase Ive done the same thing so many times I can't even recall the number. Of course that was also when uncle sam demanded my time as well. Now I do manage to take a break thanks to the trust worthy guys working with me. Enjoy life, otherwise whats the point?
richy 08-05-2002, 07:00 PM lol how can someone ask that on this forum. the answer is daily lol.
i remember doing a RAD assignment at uni, we unusually only had a week to do it, i spent three days awake 24 7 , then 8 hrs sleep then 4 days awake 24 7. apparentlythe assignment was a test, to teachus in rad that sometimes you cant complete all the tasks and have to prioratise. they were a bit miffed when i handed mine in complete along with my housemate. never again.
shaunewing 08-05-2002, 09:52 PM Well, I haven't actually fainted - but I've fallen asleep at my desk before.
Once I fell asleep on the desk phone - knocked the receiver off. There are almost 40 buttons on the phone so they made a nice imprint in my face. It started ringing which woke me up pretty quickly :)
The other time I fell asleep on a few papers. They made a nice pillow.
Late last year I was going to catch a plane - but I'd been up for about 3 days celebrating (I'd finished and graduated from high school). I sat down in my seat as we were preparing for take off and started to doze off. A flight attendant noticed, gave me a pillow and as soon as my head touched the pillow I was sound asleep until the air pressure changes an hour and a half later indicated we were about to land and I woke up :) (this was a night time flight so it made it all the better).
I also fell asleep on my desk at school once a few years ago.. looked at my watch and found out I'd been asleep for 30 mins.... lucky nobody noticed :D (at least if they did, they never said anything) (this could have been good for a post in the embarassing situation thread a while back :))

Agreed. Stripped a bit of formwork in my time as well as spending time on a jackhammer. :) I suppose at least back then we had weekends.

Aghhhhh, I used to hate doing formwork and concreting. Them 6:30am starts in the winter truly sucked.
mrbling 08-07-2002, 12:20 AM roy,
That is not the correct way to work, I only work about 1 hour a day, when you run your own company you need to set schedules,
if your working 22 hours a day and your company is not a multi million dollar company , your just wasting your time. which is the cold hard truth.
Spend 2-3 hours a day and put your best effort into it, no TV, no distraction, no WHT, nothing, and thats all you need.
I also can not see anyone working over 12 hours a day, what is there to do in hosting? Unless theres a big server/router failure, that still only takes like 3-4 hours to fix, Theres nothing to do in the web hosting business that will take 12 hours a day other then marketing.. Absolutely nothing.
Espically in the web hosting business when everything is automated, theres almost 0 work in the web hosting business.
I probably only work 40 minutes a day answering sales/billing emails max, and maybe 1 hour a day for research and marketing
the rest of the time, I just do not work. Keeps me fresh, keeps me sharp.
DanielP 08-07-2002, 02:11 AM Woooooooooooooooooo mr big shot "i've got it all automated so I don't have to work"......... can we convert that into "I don't have many customers so they don't bug me" :)
I've been at this many years, I can promise you, automated or not there's plenty of work to go around. :)
Tux-e-do 08-07-2002, 02:29 AM Who works these kind of hours anymore?
2 hours MAX.....per WEEK!! and thats only to pay staff. :D

Same here, I miss the old days of manual labor, working my butt off in the heat roofing houses, for $12 an hour.

I remember working on a job and I was helping the roofer put on the colorbond iron roof. He slipped from the top of the sheet and reached out to grab the top of the sheet, only to slice 4 of his fingers off.
I've fallen off a few roofs, sliced my hand open and a few other little incidents that ended up in the emergency room of the nearest hospital. :o

Yerk Aussie Bob, that mental image is waaay to strong.
mrbling 08-07-2002, 11:54 PM Your damn right theres plenty of work to go around,
except it goes around to my employees :)
I just sit around and pick my boogers.
Theres no work in hosting, once the servers are stable,
all there is is advertising and hitting join buttons.
Leave the customer service up to your employees.
Now thats what I call a "BUSINESS".

Yes. Same thing here. 3 hours of sleep and I am only in the planning or privet stages, not public yet. I hope it gets better, if not, O_O.

I'm going to print your post and hang it on the Data Center Wall. I'll also send an email copy to the entire staff. Seems in reality, I could just fire them all and go on vacation :D
Yippy!!!! I'm Free!!! Thank YOU for showing me the light!!!!

Something I really want, but can't hant have it for long. :D
Can someone explain to me what sleep is? sleep vi. 1. [techspeak] To relinquish a claim (of a process on a multitasking system) for service; to indicate to the scheduler that a process may be deactivated until some given event occurs or a specified time delay elapses. 2. In jargon, used very similarly to v. block; also in `sleep on', syn. with `block on'. Often used to indicate that the speaker has relinquished a demand for resources until some (possibly unspecified) external event: "They can't get the fix I've been asking for into the next release, so I'm going to sleep on it until the release, then start hassling them again."
Anymore questions?
DoobyWho 08-09-2002, 02:48 AM I thought sleep was something to do with a thing called rest. hmm.

Work Smart, not Hard.
just because you work 15 hours a day don't mean you are working smart.
Delegate, delegate delegate.
Then you can smoke up on all the free time you will have.
