illusionist 08-04-2002, 03:23 PM hey guys,
my site www.iomx.com just won the goldenwebaward. they are also offering cretifcates for which they are asking 21 $, i wanted to ask is the certificate worth the money, or just another way for the award guys to earn money! . pls comment!
alohahosts 08-04-2002, 03:29 PM Sorry, but doesn't everyone win that award? I wouldn't pay the money, it seems to me that it is just another way for them to make money.
illusionist 08-04-2002, 03:35 PM So its not worth it then!
TheMMIz 08-04-2002, 04:07 PM Thats just a scam, you win an award and pay them money?
Anyone can make up any award and say you won, I sure havent heard of any goldenwebaward, and Im guessing most people haven't as well.
By the way, you won the TheMizWebAward... but its going to cost you $74.95 to receive... Ill be waiting ;)

:D
I once helped move a site that had two (count 'em) pages of web awards. While the site owner was proud as pie over them, I found them to be simply a cheap way to get sites to link to them. I didn't dare tell her that, though.
I visited a couple of the "award" sites, and got the idea that anyone who applies for an award will "win" one, and will be prompty invited to use their "Award Logo" and link back to their site. As for the money, I didn't know about that, though I can't say I am suprised.
illusionist 08-04-2002, 04:42 PM here is the award website link take a look http://www.goldenwebawards.com .
illusionist 08-04-2002, 04:48 PM hmm... not everyone wins the awards......well not the higher rating ones anyways.....its real tought to bag even one of them....they even disqualify you if u dont go by thier criteria. The lower ratings award site ususally just give it away i agree, as they want thier award to be famous.
try winning the level 5 award.......u will know what i mean!:D
I asked about the certificate thingie beaucse their website looked really very impressive...check the link.
Well, what's in it for you? You get to put a logo on your site saying you've won an award, is that worth the price to you? Only you can know that.
As to this particular site, it's clearly been created for the purpose of getting links, and it seems to be working well to some extent. The site has a Google PageRank indicated at 7, with over 9,000 incoming links. Now look at all those yellow links on the left margin: all of those sites that I looked at are owned by the same company as the award site. And that's where the scheme isn't working as well: a couple of those sites have a PR of zero, as do internal pages at goldenwebawards.com. That indicates a probable penalty by Google due to crosslinking or other shady techniques --and among the PR0 sites are the banner business and the "traffic center."
And that's why I'd hesitate to take them up on their offer: they're doing some things that search engines discourage. That wouldn't necessarily stop me on principal, but I'd hesitate because search engines like Google have said simply that linking to "bad neighborhoods" means risking a penalty. I wouldn't link to any site that appears to have been singled out in a bad light by Google.
But again, it's your call; you have to decide if the benefits are worthwhile.

IGobyTerry 08-04-2002, 05:22 PM Yeah even I won the golden web award for a site I had awhile back. I don't think it's really anything special.
illusionist 08-04-2002, 05:24 PM I think i see your point.
Are there no awards that are really worth having?
Are all the awards BOGUS ?
IGobyTerry 08-04-2002, 05:25 PM The Yahoo! Site of the Week award is a nice award to win. Will bring a couple hundred thousand visitors to your site.
edude 08-04-2002, 05:26 PM Yep the Edude Awards are definetly worth having, for free aswell!
illusionist 08-04-2002, 05:31 PM whats the link for edude awards?
Tux-e-do 08-05-2002, 12:42 AM Awards are dumb, half of the award graphics look chit also.
But hey, go on you only live once buy the award, who knows you could be helping a starving child :D

The golden web award is pretty well known I think. simply because you see it all over really... can't say I know if it's hard to win
its kind of funny how www.coolsiteoftheday.com has become commercialized. The more you pay the more likely it is that you win the award, and you get tons of traffic by doing so
CritticAge 08-05-2002, 02:18 AM The golden web award is nothing, it used to be. They get so many submissions that any site gets it. It is no awad these days.
