my first host was also Geocities (yuck!), I've also used freeservers and tripod.

After getting sick of the banner ads, I went looking for a paid host...I found cyberwings...

My first free host: Geocities - If I remembered the url, I'm sure the page is still there :D
My first paid host: PHPwebhosting.com (I think thats the url) - I was there about 4-5 days before I realized they couldn't keep their servers up :D

I had a great time with cw until recently...and the host I (temporarily) have now is good. Things started out being pretty lame with geocities, but every time I get a new host it's better than the last...this time next year I'll probably be in hosting heaven :)

My first free host was Homestead. The best free host I've ever seen. Now they've gone pay :bawling:

My first paid host was Valueweb. They were pretty helpful. I also registered my domain using them too.

I can't remember what the first free host I used was. It was one of the big onces but wasn't Geocities or Tripod. I think it started with an 'H'.

My first paid host was Simplenet.com. I remember when I left them and went to a host that would allow CGI scripts. I thought that was the greatest.

I used a number of free hosts, so I don't know who the first one was... but I used AOL at one point (very briefly, my space got used up quick heh), and I used Geocities.. I don't think I ever went far with Angelfire or Tripod, but I did setup accounts a few years ago and didn't like it.

My first paid host was ICOM, which I guess was bought by Interland now, based on what's on their website.

my first host was GREAT. It was like 5 years ago. thenuerve or something. It was a true virtual dedicated server. Root access and everything. Ran zues web server. Then someone abused their account, and they took away root access. I had to find a new host. I felt like a fool asking for root access. I learned a lesson there.

hmm, I think it was CobaltRacks back in the days they were crap and had little more than what seemed like the bandwidth of a 56k modem :)

then for a reason i still dont know i moved over to ***** (accompanied by their regular downtime, seemed like someone was unplugging the router every so often :confused:as a practical joke), yet another bad experience and i moved to WeinBar (now owned by Deru) ive had a few others none for a significant amount of time, i just went with them to test them out so i could become a better mod!

My first host was Geocities and AOL at the same time.

Was starting to code small programs for AOL 2.0 at the time and didn't even know what HTML was :stickout I just surfed the miniscule web that existed back then and had no idea I could make my own web page. Geocities was ok before they started to expansively think banners and advertising space ;)

My first free host was Geocities back in early 1996 when they were only small.

Those were the days where they had no advertising (just a link back to them on your entry page) and the owners used to frequent the message boards and talk with everybody.

Since a few years ago one of my friends hosted my personal sites on his business grade DSL connection so I never needed any paid hosting. My first paid host was back in 2001 with CFM-Resources.

I constantly cycled through free hosts...

geocities, angelfire, homestead...

Then hosted it off my own computer using ml.org (dyndns... Too bad it shut down... Monolith (ml.org) was a great site)...

Now w/ HostRocket... A little over priced for the actual package I have but, the level of support I've gotten (aside from their recent e-mail switch) has been worth the price paid.

My first host was stupidest most idiotic host on the internet.

http://www.digiblockshosting.com/

He used a cobalt rack, I paid around $60.00 for a entire year. Well my hosting was on and off, then about 14-20 days later his website is gone, so is mine. I talk to him on aim and he said he couldn't afford to pay his server. I asked for a refund, he said he spent it. He did have a 30 day money back guarantee. Then I check on him a month later he is backup and running. Then later he is down again. I still request a refund and he still won't give it! This happend back in october 2001. I just request the refund to bug him because he is such a a-hole. Thats my first experience.

My first free host was Homestead.com They were 10000000 times better then my paid hosting digiblockshosting.com

I started thinking about my old days..
Here's what I came up with ...
An old site me and my wife had created when were not married... :)

http://www.angelfire.com/ak/AmarjyotiSangeetha/index.html

We had a lot of sites and email addresses with all kinds of sites like angelfire , spree, fortunecity, tripod etc...

Then we graduated to paid hosting .
Started with a reseller package with nomonthly.com ....

Have a great day :)

First Paid Host: Tierranet for 2 years I think. Payed $10 a month for no CGI, bad control panel, no PHP and not a lot of anything else. Hi

My first host was priddynet.com. My screen name at that time was "gooser" and if you type in a certain URL, you'll see that he (or someone he sold the domain to) made a porn site out of it:angry: . That was nearly 7 years ago and he hosted me in his basement on an old Windows box and nothing worked right at the time but it was'nt his fault - just that a lot of the technology did'nt exist back then. He was a very good host though.

- Cheers

My first paid host was Allwebco. That was in 1999. I did a search on Yahoo/Google and chose the first one with the biggest storage. Had no problems with it - good uptime, speed, support and everything.

...But about 5 months later I was "lucky" to click on the banner of ***** which offered even more webspace. Something like 500Mb for a basic account (which I think was yet rare in the year of 1999). And, of course, they offered "Unlimited bandwidth". I couldn't resist the temptation to switch to *****. The uptime was terrible. In the very first month the server with my site went down for 2 days.

It is such a pity most newbie hosting clients choose the host only by the price and storage/bandwidth limits and, just like me, have to learn the lesson before they get the idea of what is really important about a web host.

OE-Pages.com!!!

Has anyone been there before? The "Create-Uh-Page" wizard? The site is gone now, I guess they got a bit too popular and couldn't gain enough funds. But it was the coolest site ever. Webpage wizards, they even had a library of graphical horizontal animated gif's which were the best..

They even calmly tried to explain to me why my images wern't working in the "insert your own html" box; cause the URL's were from my local C drive and not online (made in word).

EDIT: My first host was the Armory, a Santa Cruz geekhaus (geez, I'd forgotten about that...) I didn't really have a web page on either ucscb or Si and Am (the Sun Sparc servers). "Don't type rm -r...no, I said DON'T type that!!!"

My first (no, scratch that, second) host was Geocities, back in 1995 when it was just started and the monthly newsletters were written by a woman named Erica - I remember when she got married, and included bits about her wedding plans.

My first paid host was the ISP Got.net. After that, it was Webcom, before they were bought out by Verio.

I've got one up there that hasn't been updated since 1995...so I think that Tripod must have a very interesting definition of "inactive".

My first host ever was Crosswinds - never again *shudders*

Went through many, many free hosts before I finally decided that I'm willing to pay for my hosting, so I got around to using AWH and have been with them ever since ;)

My first host was Homestead when free and it was also my first paid host.

The former was ignorant but the latter stupid.

Hi Gordo ... All the best for the New Year.

We all started out ignorant when it comes to web hosting and the net in general, however we Learn. That's the one point web hosts need to remember.

1st Free: GeoCities (1999)
1st Paid: I thought it was CyberWings but after reading Gordo's response, remembered it was Homestead also. I can't believe I paid for that.

My first free host was freeservers, which I used for about 4 months. The site is still there too, after 2+ years (just redirects to the actual domain I moved the site to). www.nano-reef.4t.com

My first paid host was addr.com (about 2 years and 2 days ago). I stayed with them for about 6 months or so.

First host 3 years ago was ireg.com which was later bought out about a year ago by Ampira.com . IReg.com was always up good servers and all but their support couldn't get any worse they would always redirect my problem to different places til finally it would get fixed.

I went through a whole bunch of free hosts. The first one, however, was Geocities (http://www.geocities.com). The others I've used include: VirtualAve (http://www.virtualave.net), Tripod (http://www.tripod.com), Crosswinds (http://www.crosswinds.net), DigitalRice (http://www.digitalrice.com), Port5 (http://www.port5.com), etc. (This may have something to do with my age. At 12, I couldn't make a decent website, let alone pay for a domain.) I think VirtualAve lasted the longest.

The first "paid" host I had was... well, my father. He hosted my domain from the servers in his office. I didn't get any CGI capabilities or anything like that (and I wanted to host my friends there, too), so I finally went to a true paid host: Aletia (http://www.aletia.net). I was unhappy with them, so I left them for Softerweb (http://www.softerweb.com). Since Softerweb went out of business(?), I'm now at Dot5Hosting (http://www.dot5hosting.com).

That's a lot of hosts... Heh.

My first host was affinity back in '96 or '97.

Nothing like paying 19.95 a month for 50 megs of space and 1 or 2 gigs of transfer, if that . . .

My First host was also those free things, I tried `em all then I moved onto a friends server then I used various places, some like UCVHost.com << Frikkin terrible dont touch them with a 10 foot pole, they dropped a customers of mines site and mysql db unintentionally during an upgrade that had some 100 property details, it was awful.
