Plesk seems to be great, but it is pricey. Is there something similar that is cheaper or even free?

Plesk software eases the configuration and management of UNIX-and Linux-based servers. At install, the software fully configures a server and sets up a web-based administrative interface. The interface lets administrators and clients share the management of servers, domains, and e-mail through their browsers.

If you are looking for a dedicated servers, many hosts offer plesk and other control panels free of charge with the server. Look around.

If you are talking about a total package type thing like Plesk, that installs all the web server software (php, sql, etc.) and has an admin, as well as, user CP, then I don't think there is anything cheaper. Considering the license tops out at $550, I can't think of why that would be pricey.
Something free and as complete (ready to go), not that I know of. Webmin is free but it isn't quite as bundled, nor does the stock config offer user control (though this can be added - not something I've done, but some have here).

Do these programs like plesk use mysql and php? How secure is it if they store credit card info.

Hello,
We're currently in beta stages of AWESOM; (Advanced WEb Server Operation Manager) which is designed for web hosts.
It will integrate into our billing system (which is already freely available) and our support system (which is also already freely available).
AWESOM supports plug in modules for different server configuration needs.
It will deploy with the following modules:
- domain manager
- dns manager
- mysql manager
- task manager
- mail manager
- mailing list manager
- site protection manager
It will also deploy with wizards for setting up new
hosting accounts.
We are currently soliciting wish lists from hosts; so if you want to see anything in this sytem, please let me know at rd@voxel.net.
I will post a more formal announcement in the annoucement forum, but just wanted to give you a heads up that this IS in the works and is already largely done.
Pricing will be significantly cheaper.
