Not a pleasant experience thou.

Maybe because you were too impatient and expecting too much. If you find my post unreasonable, imagine what DomainsAreFree might be thinking if they see this thread.

Anyway, good to see the issue's resolved.

DomainsAreFree.com is as slimy as they come. They're actually associated with a hosting company, ******.com. When you register a domain with them, it's free if you buy their hosting, but $3.99 if you want to host elsewhere. Fair enough.

But then a month or two later, you will get an e-mail informing you of an upgrade to the hosting account that will cost $40, unless you decline it. If you ignore this email thinking it doesn't apply to you because they aren't hosting your site, they will go ahead and charge your credit card $40 for the nonexistent upgrade to the nonexistent hosting.

If you decline it, you'll get the same email about a month later, with another $40 charge.

They are very good about apologizing and refunding the money, if you catch them at it and call. If not, too bad for you. I know two other people who both got dinged for $80 and didn't get it back until I told them to go check their credit card records. They got their refunds, but how many other people didn't?

If they tried that on any one like me it's going to end up costing them a lot in charge backs. I wouldn't really care how good they are at refunding my card, that's just an unauthorised transaction, if they do indeed conduct their bussinuess like that.

No experience with them my self. I know why too. Domains are not free. Any one giving out free domains is making money some where.

invisioni, you should bear this in mind when picking a supplier. At $3.99 for a .com, they're making a loss and hoping you buy something else while you're there. You're not going to get amazing customer support or SMTP servers powerful enough to keep their mail queue to a minimum.

I'm sure that you have to agree to there terms when you buy from them and there may be written that you agree to there practice. In case of a charge back from you they can provide your card issuer with those details and then the issuer may charge you the charge back fee which can become quite costly for you.
Be careful with charge backs they can fire back.

Quoting their agreement:

3.1 Customer acknowledges that from time to time, but not more than twice per calendar quarter ****** may automatically provide Customer with upgrades, new products, and new services that ****** introduces and Customer agrees that ****** may bill Customer for such products and services on the credit card, checking account or other form of payment Customer has provided and that is on file with ****** to pay for ongoing services. Customer understands and agrees that there is no purchase obligation and that Customer will have 30 days after receipt of any new products and services to cancel such additional products or services by opening a Billing Ticket at [redacted] and put 'Cancel Additional Service' in the subject field for a full refund.

I got those (fraudulent) charges before receiving the emails and promptly chargedback them at the bank. But don't chargeback before transfering away the domains or you'll lose them.
