I apologize to the knowledgeable contributors of this forum for asking such a basic question but I am uninformed.

I have a web server running SBS 2003 IIS 6.0
I have a static IP address for this web server
I have a website running on the web server that is visible when you type my static IP address into an Internet Browser
I have registered a domain name.

How do I make my domain name point to my web server? When I type in www dot mydomainname dot com I get a default parked web page for my domain registrar.

go to your domain control panel and enter the name servers provided by your host.

1 ) create an account in mydomain.com ( is free )
2 ) Change the dns of your domain in the registrar to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com
3 ) In mydomain.com get the free dns tools, and point tha a And NS to the IP.

So if I understand you correctly because I don't have a Domain Name Server someone else needs to store the translation tables. These tables tell people that www dot mydomain dot com points to 125.236.218.xxx (my web server static ip address)

Does anyone use namecheap? (www dot namecheap dot com) If so can you tell me how I would configure the domain management settings so that the namecheap DNS servers are used? This would be better then using another company such as www dot mydomain dot com for the DNS.

Yes you understand good. Anyway namecheap say some days ago they go to implement these functions in few time, but i dont know how do it in this time.

What you call the "translation tables" is called DNS. As someone has already mentioned, some registrars provide DNS service as part of their registration packet - but some don't.

If yours doesn't then you will need to find a hosting company that can do the job for you.

If you have a sufficiently technical mind (and if you're running your own web server then you probably do!) you can use a do-it-yourself DNS provider such as www.zoneedit.com

Lubcea, the back part of zoneedit is 95% same of mydomain.com but mydomain is free and without limit of domains. Check yourself one domain in mydomain, not need be registered with them.

You need to setup DNS somewhere (zoneedit.com, and mydomain.com are free).
Then tell your registrar to use those name servers.

Piece of cake.

Go to Namecheap, use their 'default' nameservers.
Use 'A' records on your domain's WWW and @none hostnames and point them to your IP address.

Wait for a few minutes of the DNS to udpate, and go to your domain name. Done!

ps. Some others above suggest for you to create your own nameservers. It's not worth it - you're better off using the Namecheap (actually eNom) dns since they'll be faster and more redundant than yours. Let alone the fact that you probably don't want to manage your own nameservers.

How come it takes around 6 posts before the OP gets any useful information at all?

In your namecheap domain management, click on the domain name in the list.
Click 'All Host Records' down at the left side menu.
You should see two fields at the top named @ and www.
Now choose A-Record from the drop down box to the right for both fields, and put in the IP address of the webserver you run.

If you don't see the "All Host Records" menu item, click 'transfer DNS back to us' higher up in the menu.

Hi!

Changing the nameserver provided by your hosting company will solve your problem and if you donta want to get that parking page the leave the space for nameserver blank till u get the hosting space for that domain,
