Well LONDON--Genetically-modified food can damage the immune system of rats and stunt their growth according to new research released yesterday. Professor Arpad Puztai, the scientist who carried out the research, said he would not eat modified food after seeing the results of his tests. Professor Puztai of the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen, fed modified potatoes to the rats for 100 days to observe how it affected them. The potatoes were produced by the the institute specially for the experiment, with similar modifications to those developed by commercial food producers to make crops resistant to pesticides. Professor Puztai said his findings raised grave questions about the safety of modified food for humans. "We are assured that this is absolutely safe and that no conceivable harm could come to us from eating it. But if you gave me the choice now, I wouldn't eat it," he said. The most worrying feature of the experiment was the effect of the potatoes on the rats' immune systems, Professor Putzai said. A growing proportion of process food available in Britain contains modified ingredients, particularly soy beans, but there are no legal requirements for consumers to be warned by labels on packaging. Rewdog 08-03-2002, 03:53 PM How about Genetic Manipulation in Humans? IE anything from modifying Genes so a child doesn't have down syndrome to making a child have blonde hair and blue eyes. They were actually trying to get parliament in the UK to pass a law to allow them to do that. However the government didn't cross the boundary ;) off topic: Added you on ICQ RewDog, suggestion for WHR :D Darth 08-03-2002, 04:03 PM faculty i also know because you told me on msn, but you never told me the provider :bawling: Darth 08-03-2002, 04:15 PM Ok guys found out what it was... Laws regarding genetics & humans are much stricter in the UK than they are in the US. In the news at the moment are a young couple who want to genetically engineer a brother for their son who has a rare blood disorder so they can use umbilical stem cells for treatment. They have been refused permission to do it in the UK, because it's impossible to screen for the disorder, and the brother could also be born with the disease. Doctors in Chicago have offered the couple their services. Sorry, but if there's going to be any two-headed people walking on this planet, it's more likely to be on US soil than on UK :) shaunewing 08-04-2002, 10:35 AM Originally posted by Rewdog How about Genetic Manipulation in Humans? Instead of leaving things to chance... people go to their local geneticist and plan their child . It may be just me - but I think that would be going a bit too far. --Shaun. cyansmoker 08-04-2002, 08:20 PM Originally posted by shaunewing (signature) "Empower Your World" Shaun, what does that mean?
