We are currently looking at hiring for the position of Sales. The position will be a remote work contract and (not in office) not having offered an outside sales job before I was wondering what a reasonable offer would be. And what are some of the considerations to take in before hiring.

Do I offer commission only or offer a mix of salary and commission? etc.

I am hoping to hear from those who have had good and bad experiences doing this so I can know better what to expect.

Personally, If your going to get someone worth their salt, there are a number of companies out there and to attract the best sales person or at least offer something that is attractive, I would suggest a combination.

The base:commission ratio should be dissporportionate to eachother. If the base is low, the rate of commission of the sale should be higher. I would offer a Total Compensation package that could be met either by base / commission.

If your total comp is $50k yearly for example, then make sure that the quotas are reasonable and could be obtained and give that rep the yearly revenue of $50k.

In general I would set it up with a goal/quota of monthly recurring revenue.
