ensim is not to be used its so crappy for ppls customer to use i.e cgi bin probs, you carnt have scripts set to 777 & it has soo much to catch up to if you looking to buy a control panel WHM/Cpanel higly reccommended! i wouldnt even suggest it for ppl to give free webspace away with!

That is something that just happend in 3.1 .

But, I don't see why it should be a problem. My server runs all manner of scripts - shopping carts, help desks, forums, chat, mailing list managers, search engines, to name a few - they all run fine with 755. Some of them need a few of their text files to be 777 becuase they are editied form a web interface, but not the scripts.

I think it is good that you can't 777 the scripts themselves.

A lot of scripts that have logging features write the log to a text file, so yes, I can see where in some cases this could be a problem.

I've rarely had a problem with Ensim. Actually, I just had my first one. And, that was because, we didn't update a file.

I see what your getting at but ......

The script that is being executed does not have to be 777 to write to a log file - the log file has to be 777. The Ensim 777 issue only applies to executable scripts - any file can have 777 permissions set. But a script cannot be executed if it has 777 (or so it seems to me in the testing I did).

So - again I have to say I don't see what the problem is.

Actually,
this looks to me like uninformed bashing (again...I've seen way too much of this on WHT lately  ).

'777' means that anybody could clobber the script, which is a real potential security issue and SUEXEC will not allow that. Because SUEXEC is good.
Simple as that...don't blame Ensim for alleged shortcomings when they obviously try to create the most secure CP on the market.

We've had one Ensim server from Rackshack for about 6 months now and have had no problems with. But the general feeling that I get with Ensim Webppliance, is that it's very secure, in terms of what it allows the users to do, such as the shell access is restricted to what commands they have access to. Sometimes it's annoying because it seems a little too secure when you want to allow a user to have access to MySQL via SSH. We ended up just customizing the user structure slightly to allow the user to do this, we've also customized some other settings as we see fit.

Overall, Ensim is a good control panel, it's listening to its users and improving every aspect of it.

Alan Absolutely.
I have even 'given' ps and top to a few trusted users.
Yes, Ensim certainly requires a better knowledge of Unix than other CPs...

The only problem with Ensim is that it's not geared to the lowest-common-denominator. You know, morons.

i find that it wouldnt be suitible for ressellers and its is far to secure! they need to add some options to let ppl use thing ssuch as wget! which mosh ssh users would like to see. i think cpanel is far superior to the end user

LOL.

I was going to suggest he try the new control panel coming out:

"MGWJCACSEHWNTBHSMDBTWNNET Control Panel"

[Made for the Guy Who Just got Connected to AOL and Can Send E-Mail via Hotmail Who Now Thinks he can Become a Host and Start a Million Dollar Business and that They Will Not Not Need to Ever Troubleshoot] Control Panel

* It will be cheap - how about free! Don't want cheap skates bitching about price.

* It will have unlimited, free support (Toll free, 24/7 phone). You know we need to spend all our time educating idiots who shouldn't even be a host.

* It will have INSTANT updates to releases. So when PHP 5 comes out, before anyone can bitch within one minute of the release asking why it isn't in the control panel, we will have it there. We do this by use of spies secretly located in every software/GNU developers office/homes.

* It will save you the trouble of waiting for money to roll in. Once you install it, checks will just start being sent to you. Afterall, you will become a millionare when you become a host.

* It will work with EVERY third party software on the market. Afterall, we want to please the guy who is asking why it won't work with Wuzzle-Huffy Script. Yeah, only twp people use it, but those two people are import to us!

* If you start getting into trouble, it comes with handy templated e-mails like "Sorry for the trouble. We were hacked by the Chinese"

* Lastly, but not least, it comes with Auto-sysadmin. Just like in the auotpilot in the movie Airplane. Once you realize you are in over your head and that you are required to work more then a few hours a day, hit the Auto-sysadmin button and it will do the job for you.

So, sit back. Relax. Enjoy being a host. Because with "MGWJCACSEHWNTBHSMDBTWNNET Control Panel", we make dreams come through.

It will be released after the rest of the Vaporware release dates.

I cant wait for MGWJCACSEHWNTBHSMDBTWNNET Control Panel!

Instead of learning UNIX, I have decided to wait until the official release! Thanks for such a great product that blows HostGui out of the water!

ensim is great once you apply some of the freely available hacks,
I like having control over which users have access to certain shell commands and keeping people in a chrooted environment is also another bit of peace of mind.

yes it's more hassle to set up and customize like you want it but worth the trouble imo :)

you can also allow scripts to have permissions 777 by disabling suexec if you really need it....its one command

just wish the 3.1 upgrade ver would come out.
